“Super-Nice Week-long Stay”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

We had a lovely time at the Hilton Olympia on an eight-day trip to London. The Olympia is an excellent value, and beautifully kept. This Hilton was built into a pre-existing older building - Don't expect the American-style huge rooms and sweeping expanses of glass of a purpose-built US Hilton. It is a nice contemporary hotel in a lovely neighborhood within easy striking-distance of the attractions in Westminster, St. Paul's, Victoria, Southwark, etc.

Location

Be sure to do your research. The Olympia Station around the corner is not an underground tube stop. It is an Overground stop (otherwise useful, but not the same as the tube) and does not run regularly. You can hop on any of four red double-decker bus lines directly outside the hotel, and you'll be at the High Street Kensington tube station on the Circle Line in a few minutes. (Or hop on the #9 bus specifically, to Trafalgar Square.) You'll find everything you need a few steps from the hotel - wine shop, grocery, pharmacist, etc.

Lobby & Public Areas

Lovely. Nicely done, well-kept, and attractive. Wi-fi is strongest near front desk and stairs to the bar/restaurant. Four lifts are small, but quick. The bar and restaurant areas are quite nice, and the food is standard, but very good. Certainly nicer/better quality than most moderate hotel restaurants. Cash machine, computers, and a small shop are available in the lobby as well.

Rooms

Beds, pillows, and linens are very nice, and very cozy. Truly a comfortable night's sleep. Towels are standard hotel-scratchy, but big. (Appreciated!) Electrical sockets were easily accessible. Our wine and water glasses were replaced daily, tea is available in-room, and everything was very clean. Flat screen TV, alarm clock, small wardrobe, iron and board, etc. are provided. Our standard room had two chairs and a bureau/desk area as well. Photos of the rooms are accurate.

Bathrooms

Our standard room bath was just fine, beautifully clean, and well-supplied. Shower pressure and vanity area is great! My only complaint is that the bathtub/shower in our standard room was quite "short." That is, I am 6'1" (185 cm), and my head was hitting the ceiling in the shower. My husband is 6'5". You can imagine.

Staff

Lovely. Absolutely lovely. The front desk and concierge staff was wonderful. From transit directions to ticket booking, the concierge staff is great. They even helped us explore nicer, less-expensive options to Heathrow. Cleaning staff we encountered were equally as helpful. All the way around, a truly great staff. I was particularly impressed with the way they - with grace and class - handled rude, unreasonable guests. Well done.

My wife and I chose to stay at Hilton Olympia because we were participating at a trade fair at Olympia itself, only a 3-minute walk away. Fortunately we used my accumulated Hilton Honors points and didn't pay "real money" otherwise we would have been really disappointed. My wife's adjective to describe the hotel is shabby; mine is mediocre. Whatever, it doesn't live up to the expectations that go with being a Hilton. We drove to London as we had stand equipment for the fair but we felt that £35.00 per night for parking was rather steep. Added to that the rather odd system used to control parking led at one point to the attendant trying to charge me £100.00 deposit before he would allow me to take our car out of the car park. That was resolved, eventually, but another cost we baulked at was the £14.99-per 24hrs in-room wi-fi charge. No reduction if you only wanted to use your own computer for, say, an hour. Admittedly free wi-fi was available in the lobby but we didn't want to duck downstairs every time we wanted to go online. There are two PCs in the lobby area which one can pay for and use for short periods but even that proved unsatisfactory. We needed to print two short (.pdf and .jpg) documents for the fair but not even with the aid of reception staff could we achieve that. Not even e-mailing the documents to reception worked. Eventually we printed them at the organiser's office at the fair in 5 minutes.
The lifts were small and when we reached our floor we found that a lot of the paintwork in the corridors and around the doors was chipped. In our room the toilet never did flush properly despite several calls to reception. The other complaint about the room was the mini-bar. It was of the type that if you move anything, you get charged for it but with the added annoyance that anything removed couldn't be replaced without calling a hotel staff member.
On the first night we took advantage of the Hilton's dinner offer of £20 p.p. inc a glass of wine and found the food good but the breakfast buffet (regular price £17.95 but guests can buy vouchers for £12.00 each) was mediocre. As a retired airline employee I have sampled breakfasts in hotels worldwide so I know whereof I speak (Best = The Western House, Ayr).
What was good about the Hilton? The location. The staff, virtually all whom we encountered were from Eastern Europe and all were very pleasant and spoke good English. The other plus point is that the hotel has a branch of Costa Coffee on the ground floor. Good coffee, reasonably priced food and a free copy of The Independent newspaper.

Dear Martin P,
Thank you for your review. Your comments, both the great and not so great have been shared with team here. We continually strive to deliver excellent hospitality, care & service. I am sorry this did not seem the case during your visit.
The 24-hour parking charge is competitive to all the local car parks in the Kensington area and at the expo centres close hotel. The prcies are clearly displayed in the car park and on our website. This is the same with the internet charge which is also advertised as chargeable as is the case in the majority of major branded hotels for an increased bandwidth accessibility in the bedrooms.
The automated minibar system is now common place throughout Europe where most hotels have mini-bars systems which allow for automatic charging as well as assisting to identify which rooms need re-filling after consumption.
I am glad you found the location, dinner in the restaurant and the team here good, and I do hope we get the chance of welcoming you back in the future.
With best regards,
Richard.

I do hope your experience does not prevent you from visiting us in the near future.

Spent 2 nights at this hotel. Location was great on bustling Kemsington High St, However, the hotel did not live up to the expectations that is associated with the Hilton name. The room was noisy which did affect sleep. The bathroom was very small and our sink was cracked and the bath chipped. The paintwork was chipped which gave the impression of shabby rather than 4 star! On arrival we were advised that interent charges were £14.99 in the rooms but could use for free in the lobby, however did have huge problems trying to log on to internet so gave up and found other places were internet was more easliy accessible and not so expensive!
Wouldn't recommend this hotel.

This was our first stop in a Euro trip. We were very pleased with the hotel, room, staff. everything. Most of all DINNER!! We were told we ate the first night of a new menu (August 31, 2012). The food was surprisingly delicious! We had Scallops with black pudding and bacon. Asparagus with Bearnaise sauce and a quail egg. Cauliflower roasted garlic soup. Chicken with lemon and herb butter sauce. So yummy! The concierge were very helpful. nice little gift shop in the lobby. Great Stay! The view out the window wasn't great, but we didn't care.

Our family trip started in London and we stayed 2 nights at the Hilton London Olympia Hotel. The hotel was perfect for us! The hotel staffs are wonderfully helpful and friendly. It has modern and clean and efficient use of space (plenty of space for people and bags, but not a lot of wasted space). The restaurant was very nice and a great way to start the day, many thanks for David and Erica. The hotel is close to High Street Kensington Station. The Society Bar is fantastic, very modern and fashion, you have to try the Rib eye steak (awesome). Thank you Blanca and Victoria for the professional service. I would definitely stay there again.

This hotel is a typical European hotel, very friendly staff, very small rooms, very small elevators, very small hallways, very small closets, very small workout room, etc. Yet it is in an excellent spot where there is lots to do. My company puts me up here when I travel to London so I don't stay here by choice, but it is very typical of the small rooms, etc. of the culture. This is not an American Hilton.

Dear Mike C,
Thank you for your review after your recent stay with us and I am glad you enjoyed your overall stay with us.
In regard to your comment 'this is not an American hotel', you countered this in your opening by stating that we are in fact a 'European hotel'. Due to the age of the building, it is difficult for us to structurally amend the size of some of the facilities you mention without considerable expenditure. I am sorry you found some of our rooms to be small, however we do have larger upgraded rooms available should you require this upon your next visit.
With best regards,
Richard, Director of Operations.

Booked the Hilton as a late deal b&b. Location was not as central but the bus stop was outside hotel and great services into all central areas. Busy hotel and staff were efficient and helpful. Breakfast was exceptional in choice and quality. Bar prices high but good bars nearby and sensible prices. Would return but only on good price deal.

Room Tip: I requested lower floor and it was arranged.
