St Giles London - A St Giles Hotel

We stayed at St Giles for a 2night mini break. Ideal. Perfect location for West End, Covent Garden,Westminster, in fact most places. That good we didn,t even bother with tube. Hotel very good, staff very polite and helpful. Breakfast very good, especially as hotel very busy, but don,t expect any personal services, it's just look after yourself. Rooms very small. We had double on second floor but was more like a single room. It had everything we wanted including hair dryer and extra pillows. It was very clean with nice comfy bed. Would definitely stay there again and would recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for room above fourth floor

I stayed at the St.Giles hotel in January 2013 for 1 night on business.

I got an executive room (which includes executive breakfast) for £145 including taxes - for central London, that is excellent!

The hotel is 1 minute's walk from Tottenham Court underground station - stand opposite the Dominion Theatre, turn left, then walk around 100m and look for Bedford Avenue on your right.

The hotel is an fairly non-descript from the outside, and needs the signposts saying it is a hotel to find it ;)

The foyer/reception is NOT big, and not especially well laid out - there was a constant movement of tourists (mostly American) in the area, generally using it as a meeting place and effectively preventing fast checkin. NOT GOOD! Check-in staff were however polite and courteous.

The room (on the 8th floor) was a good size, albeit with a strange layout - it had an odd corridor leading off from it, complete with settee, so you could enjoy a fairly average view of London :) Room was well furnished, clean and comfortable; aircon was quiet and
effective. Bed and sleep quality excellent. Good quality complimentary toiletries, a modern styled bathroom - just a shower, no bath - and everything was clean and tidy, with everything working! Plenty of lovely thick clean towels.

TV was digital and a quite small for the size of the room though. Decent range of channels, perfectly adequate.

Now for a down point - Wi-Fi. NOT FREE??!?! In this day and age?!?! £10 for 24 hours access??!?! NOT GOOD. The competition is already offering free Wi-Fi access as a default, and this is just a rip-off.

Quality of sleep was good - no noise from other rooms or corridors.

Executive breakfast was included in the price and was excellent - choice of cereals and juices, plus a cooked breakfast option. Service not the fastest though.

I didn't make use of the leisure facilities, which are actually part of the nearby YMCA.

Checkout out was fast and efficient!

As a place to stay overnight for one night this was fine - I have seen several other "top quality" London hotels that do not offer such excellent service and quality accommodation, and they charge far more! I would stay here again. On the whole, I can recommend this hotel.

PROS
Friendly staff
Decent sized clean rooms
Location - right next to the underground
Good sleep quality

CONS
Wi-FI *NOT* free
Foyer layout poor; noisy and crowded, preventing fast checkin

Room Tip: Rooms at the higher levels are quieter

The hotel is superbly located within a 3 minute walk of the tube,(walk past the We wil rock you musical) and then turn right after the casino) Check in was very quick and allowed us to have our room nearly an hour early , which seemed to be the case for most people there.
We were upgraded to an executive room which was fine for our requirements. They werent that big but had everything needed and the shower/ toilets were especially clean with toiletries provided. They were also very quiet even though the hotel was very busy.
The breakfast in the Japanese? restaurant had a good choice of cold items, and a well cooked hot selection.
Overall a pleasant hotel and would recommend it to anyone who wants a central hotel ideal to see all the sights of London.

Solo travellers take note...the standard single rooms at this hotel are by far the smallest rooms I have ever stayed in, at any hotel, anywhere. Not sure what the doubles are like, but be aware that the single rooms are miniscule... I cannot exaggerate how tiny they are, so be forewarned! Breakfast has a good variety although served in a large and a rather characterless office-cafeteria style room. Also, no wi-fi is included. Small, slow elevators. The hotel is clean, I will say. But the best part about this hotel by far is the location, just steps away from Oxford Street shopping, the British Museum and the theatres and restaurants of the West End and Soho.

The St Giles Hotel just off Tottenham road is only 500mts from the tube and within walking distance to most theatres. Although double rooms are small, with wardrobes to match it was ample for our 4 day stay. We have been on various floors over our previous 3 visits and all are very quiet. The bathroom had been recently refurbished and rooms were very clean.
Reception staff were efficient and and although we arrived early our luggage was stored away and we were allowed to register there and then.
The 'coffee and go' is a good, as in the morning we are not hungry due to us having a dinner the previous evening, a full breakfast would be a waste.
We dined in various Cafe Rouge restaurants, the closes one being on the way to the tube station. Not only was the food excellent but we got 40% discount every time, fantastic!
To make our stay perfect the weather was dry and mild, (early January 13)

It's not horrific; the problem is that it is grim from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave. Reception not very welcoming, walk to the lift lobby and it's grim. Up to the fifth floor, across a cold link bridge along a narrow corridor, into a small small room. Room decor is 1980s with poor sound insulation overlooking a noisy Tottenham Court Rd. Furnishings are uncomfortable, bedding is scratchy. No irons available - have to hike down to the ironing room on the floor below. Redeeming features are that the TV is a new LCD model with a good picture and the bathroom, although small, has been recently refurbished. Towels are scratchy. Breakfast is very grim, dreadful self service operation with no toast, rubber croissant, awful looking cooked food and undrinkable coffee. In summary, its clean and in a good location - but you are relieved when you have checked out and on your way.
