My friend and I stayed at the Strand Palace overnight, last week. Generally speaking it is a good, clean hotel in a great location and the breakfast was super and the staff helpful and friendly. On the down side it was a little chilly in the room, not making for the best night's sleep and the room was quite basic despite paying a bit extra for a better room but these are really minor grumbles.

Stayed here on business, been redone in the standerd modern hotel way, perfectly nice. Had a room on the inside of the building with no view but very quite for central London. Room was a single but well done and very clean. Very good buffet breakfast.

We made a return stay at the hotel for 11 days earlier this month. (We have been staying at this hotel since 1982) Prebooked on their website and we received a great rate and free travel cards for the length of our stay. The hotel has been extensively modernised inside, while the outside is under refurbishment. The staff are extremely courteous, knowledgable and friendly. The breakfast is a definite upgrade worth considering for the quality and value. As other contributors have noted, the 25 pound dine and wine option is also a real bargain for central London. There are 2 bars and two restaurants (A carvery and a very good Indian). The excellent location trumps the competition; really close to Theatreland, Covent Garden market, Trafalgar Square and Chinatown (Soho) makes it really convenient for a base. Two tube stops within 5-7 mins walking distance and key bus stops just a few steps outside the front door. This is a hotel that knows how to conduct business in a grown up city like London.Rates are very competitive.

It has been a while since I've been in the Strand, and I was pleasantly surprised during my last visit - while the Hotel exterior was still under construction scaffolding as they went through their Olympics refurb during my visit, this caused no disruption to the interiors. My room was compact but well put together, clean and good value for money - the work that has been done on it has made it a smart contemporary hotel, good for travellers. Room small but good value for money for a London hotel room. Great location.

Stayed here for only one night on a Monday evening. It was perfect. Clean, warm single room. Oodles of hot water for a bath and great wooden shutters in place of curtains that added to the cosiness. I took the breakfast package and was delighted with the range of self choice items on offer. A good hearty breakfast means you spend less on lunch and last longer! Every member of staff was polite and when I requested honey at breakfast, this was no trouble and produced in a flash. Would've liked to stay longer and take in a couple of shows, but will do this in the future. Will definitely go back again!

Room Tip: My room was at the back. When I heard the Elle fashion Awards were on at the Savoy across the road...

I took my mum, who is in her 70's, to London for a two night break last weekend.

This was her Christmas gift, and I booked a package including a show (Top Hat at the Aldwych Theatre).

The hotel is brilliantly situated for Theatreland, literally minutes from Covent Garden and all its restaurants. It is also within easy walking distance of the Embankment for boat tickets or just to walk, and Trafalgar Square is also almost on the doorstep.

We stayed on room and breakfast basis, and our twin room was clean and comfortable, with a well equipped bathroom, nice TV, tea and coffee, and free use of a safe. Breakfast was busy but nevertheless served hot and well cooked, and the staff were very pleasant and obliging.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would recommend this hotel to anyone. We will be back..

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor and was easy to find, although the floor plan on the wall was a bit...

Stayed at the Strand Palace for one night recently (a Saturday) and was very happy with the overall experience. This isn't a luxury hotel but it is clean, well maintained & in a great location, the other hugely positive factor was the staff who were extremely helpful - notably Angelique on reception.
As always with city centre rooms whether it be London, Paris or New York they are fairly small & it would be unrealistic to expect anything different unless you are prepared to pay a higher price. After all with the hotel in such a convenient location for theatres, covent garden, Oxford st, Piccadilly etc. most people won't want to spend much time in the room.

Asked for a quiet room which was provided, the bed was comfy & clean. You can heat up or cool down the room itself using the radiator which I much prefer to ineffective, noisy & drying air conditioning systems & there is a switch next to the bathroom light which turns on the heated towel rail. There was a small amount of traffic noise but it wasn't an issue and once again if you are in a city centre it would be unreasonable to expect total silence.

I didn't take breakfast or any meals at the hotel so can't comment on the food, there are tea and coffee making facilities in the room (a limited section of tea & only enough milk for one cup each but if more is needed I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem & there is a Tesco just down the road on the left if supplies are needed).

My only cons were;

No mini-bar or fridge within the room.
No bath in the room I stayed in but I think this would have been provided if I had asked, was just in a rush to check in.
The hotel lifts are very slow.

I would definitely stay there again if the price remains good value, if it increases I would probably look elsewhere & expect more luxury from a 4 star hotel, but this hotel would remain a very good fallback choice in any event.
