This hotel is in a great location for London's theatres and shopping. It's on a main road but our room was quiet. The room was big enough but pretty standard, no special or unusual touches you may expect from a boutique hotel. We got the room for £100 which is good for this location. The room was ok but could have been a little cleaner, it looked a bit unloved. The staff were helpful though.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for reviewing our property following your stay with us.

I was glad to read that you found the location and the size of your room suitable to your visit. Our location is one of our strongest features being positioned within walking distance to Oxford street and many other attractions in the West End.
Our property features, décor and smaller touches within the rooms do make us stand out from the rest of our competitors and placing us comfortably in the boutique market.

Your offer of £100 was of course a great deal, please do keep your eye out for some of our fantastic Sale specials in January 2014!

Kind Regards

Andrew van Eeden

I think the website photographs are misleading. Although clean the hotel looked dull and worn which is a great pity as it doesn't make the most of the good architectural features. Our room was ok but the shower room was tiny and very inconvenient. Worse still, there was a horrible smell from the drains, on speaking to staff about this I was given a can of air freshener to use. They really need to do something about this. If you do decide to stay here, I recommend you avoid room 52! On a happier note the English breakfast was very good and plentiful. The waiting staff were also good. Hotel staff pleasant and willing. The Academy is well located for the West End, being about a 10 - 15 minute walk to Oxford Street and a bit further for theatres.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property following your stay with us.

I am sorry you did not find the décor to your liking - the property is of course made up of a few old Georgian Town Houses dating back to the 17th century hence the old features and slightly quirky layout.
Glad you enjoyed the breakfast offering - always a good kick start to your day and thank you for the kind words relating to our staff.

Hope to see you visit us again in the not too distant future.

Kind Regards

This was an 'emergency ' booking as I'd been caught on a very delayed train and couldn't face a further 1.5 hours to get home.

My room was beautifully decorated altho' there was a sacrifice of form over function as the two radiators were behind the thick curtains so it got a little chilly. All was clean and the bathroom and room a goodly size.

Breakfast, hmmm, what is it about this chef and eggs? Another reviewer reported an omelette /frittata confusion; I asked for scrambled and received what I can only describe as an omelette with a teaspoon of scrambled egg in the centre. I couldn't eat it as it was quite leathery (rest of breakfast was good) but the waitress didn't bother to ask if there was a problem which is not what I would expect of 4* service.
I'll stay again but would go out for breakfast.

Visited London for a weekend with the family. The three of us shared a junior suite at the Academy hotel on Gower street. It is a cute old building and well furnished. The location is good (walking dist. to New Oxford, British Museum, many Universities) though the street is kind of noisy. The worse thing though was the poor service. The staff seems quite ιnexperienced and not very helpful. The maid left the door of our room open after she/he cleaned it! We found it open many hours later... Thankfully nothing was missing. I'd look for another hotel in the same area.

Room Tip: Junio suite is good size room for a 3 member family or a couple.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property following your stay with us.

I was glad to read that you found the hotel location and the actual property to suit your requirements during this visit. As a central London property, we take security extremely serious and further training will be undertaken to avoid such incidents in the future.

Please do use us again which will give my staff the opportunity to regain your faith in not only our property but also the service.

Kind Regards

Stayed just one night as I had business and a late night in the City. DOesn't look much from the outside, but inside it's warm, clean and everything (in my experience anyway) works as it should. I had a room on the ground floor, and wasn't bothered by traffic noise at all. Bathroom was spacious and clean and the shower was first rate. Bed was one of the comfiest I've slept on in a hotel in ages, and the decor in the room is rich and cosy.

Breakfast was reasonable cost and an excellent quality, most importantly cooked to order by a CHEF, and not from a hot buffet, so it was nicely presented and actually hot. Finally the staff were all very friendly and pleasant without being intrusive.

In summary, this has become my new standard hotel for when I need a convenient hotel in London on business. Nothing negative to add at all.

Room Tip: Only stayed in one, but I'll definitely be requesting a ground floor room at the front the next...

Our stay was only for one night, sat 23-24 nov. Travelled from wales by car, the staff were very helpful in recommending free parking, a bit of a walk but a much appreciated money saver.
We were able to check in at 1.30.Rooms were on top floor (30&31), a bit of a walk up, but staff were on had to carry luggage and show us to our room. Rooms were warm and lovely and clean, ( on the down side, we found them a bit too warm to sleep in , we had to put the air con on by night). They both had flat screen tv, ipod docking station and mini bar. No tea making facilites in the room, that would have been more use than the mini bar!!!
The bathrooms could have done with a bit of a makeover, cracked floor tiles and when you used the shower, it went everywhere all over the bathroom floor & walls!!!!
Staff were very helpful in assisting us with directions to the local tube station, and other local attractions, providing us with local maps and directions.
Cant comment on the other facilities as we never used the hotel only to sleep and eat breakfast.
If you are looking for a central hotel, then this was perfect. It was a bit pricey at £219 for b& b, but to be fair, that was the going rate in the area. i would definatley use again.

We found this to be a most comfortable hotel, and a very convenient place to stay, being so close to Oxford St and the British Museum. Our room was small - but Georgian terrace houses did have small rooms - and was on the ground floor. It was warm, the bed was very comfortable, and the hot water was both very hot and plentiful. Sensibly there is a temperature control on the bath/shower tap, so no chance of scalding yourself. There is also a Library with a computer (but very slow connection speed) And we do hope you enjoy reading The Independent which is the newspaper of the `Hotel's choice.
The staff were marvellous, always offering help and advice - the loan of an umbrella for that rainy day, hailing a taxi when needed, asking if we wished to leave our luggage with them when we checked out. And we were pleased to see so many fire escape doors, straight onto the street.
However, we were bemused by the omelette I had for breakfast one day, which came looking rather like a pizza that had lost its dough base: totally round and stuffed full of ham and mushrooms, and to be honest, it was cooked for rather too long for my taste. It was rather more like a frittata than an omelette. I think omelettes should be folded over to encase the filling and still a tad moist. But then perhaps I am a traditionalist.
I do not think it would be fair to deduct from the overall rating because of this one blip, so we are happy to give it 5 stars.
