“Convenient location, nice rooms and garden”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We'd stayed in this hotel for 5 nights in summer 2013: There were 3 of us (2 adults and an adolescent), and the room we've got was very connfortable, with a kingsize bed and a queensize sofa bed. During the day, if we were spending time at the hotel, we closed the sofa bed, and the room was really enjoyable and cozy like a suite.
Bathroom was fine, and the room service impeccable, with sweet apples and mineral water for free every day.
Our rate didn't included breakfast at the hotel, which we tried once: it was ok, but expensive (besides being served in the basement floor): for the same amount (or even less!) it is possible having a very nice breakfast in variuos nice cafes in the neighborhood.
There are nice common spaces at the ground floor to spent relaxing time, including a delicious little backyard/garden

Room Tip: The room does have A/C, which you will need in summer if you have a room on the street side and the...

We stayed at The Academy from 23/8- 26/8 having decided to do a short break and check out the London sights. We were allocated Room 3 which I have to say was very small. It was a very nicely furnished room and had everything required apart from space !! Possibly had I requested a change of room on arrival, this would have been granted however in fairness to the hotel I did not do this. Maybe for one night the room would be OK but for three nights it began to feel claustrophobic.
The staff without exception from front desk to porters were extremely professional, polite and welcoming. Not one member of staff ever passed us without a smile and a warm greeting. The service was excellent.
There are two gardens at the rear of the hotel which can be enjoyed by guests and the nearest tube is only a few minutes walk away making this a great location in central London.
I would return to this hotel but would make sure I was not allocated Room 3 !!

Room Tip: Request a room at the back of the hotel as it is on a busy road and also not Room 3.

Although we only stayed for 1 night, we found The Academy a pleasant place to stay. The room was clean and catered for our needs. The Academy is in a great location, it is within walking distance of Euston Station and some good restaurants. The staff were excellent and we especially appreciated the very comfortable bed. The only minus was some cracking to tiles and basin in the bathroom. We would certainly stay here again on an overnight stay and the advance booking price was very reasonable..

I don't believe that seriously mildewed tiles and shower screen equates to luxury. Nor would I say that simply having space to include a sofabed turns a room into a suite. Really very disappointed with the condition of the bathroom and the size/layout of the room. Can't fault the location and style of the property but couldn't even sit in the conservatory as it had been designated for a private meeting. Also booked a breakfast-inclusive rate direct with hotel, only it wasn't: supplement charged for anything cooked but no mention of this on the website.

Room Tip: Junior Suite is no more than a large double

I stayed there for one night in June with work. What a great place!
The rooms are spacious and very well furnished.
I particularly enjoyed the feather quilt and pillow!
One downpoint though is the bathroom, which had some cracked tiles. Shame.
Short(ish) walk to Leicester Square and all the theatres. Great neighbourhood.
Just be aware that there is no lift though (although the staff did help us with our luggage).
Breakfast was great. Great choice, spacious room, although a little pricey (I wasn't paying for it myself, but still...)
All in all, very nice place!!

Room Tip: No lift, so ask for a room on the ground or first floor if you don't like stairs!

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience here with us. I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay and found our hotel comfortable.

Being a townhouse indeed we do not have a lift but as you correctly stated, our staff are always looking forward to be helpful and make a guest stay a great one.

I was sorry to read about the bathroom comments; we are in process of scheduling a bathroom refurbishment programme that should take place towards the end of the year.

Looking forward to welcome you again in the future,

Very nice hotel. WIFI was not great. This is a great neighborhood, the bus stop is across the street, the tube a short walk and the theater district a nice stroll. There are lots of good local restaurants in the area, TAS, was our favorite. However, most of the hotels in the area were originally townhouses and do NOT have elevators. The staff helped us with our luggage, but we were originally given a lovely room on the 3rd floor and it was just too many stairs [about 60]. Ask for a quiet room facing the garden on the 1st or 2nd floor. As for breakfast both the full English and the Continential were overpriced. But, the ala carte eggs and toast or porridge were quite reasonable and comparable to cafes in the area.

Room Tip: facing the garden on the 1st or 2nd floor.

This hotel is in a fairly decent location and could ooze character if given major TLC. I get very irritated when I walk into a room and see a torn/cracked lamp shade. This tells me straight away that attention to basic detail is not there. The room itself (up many stairs on the top floor) was not bad but in need of an update. I was grateful for air conditioning. The one window did not close properly. The bathroom is surprisingly small, very dated and the shower has cracked tiles. I would not say that my room was not worth the £200 I paid. Hopefully the manager will be able to convince the owners to invest in this potentially lovely place.
