The words Groupon and Waldorf are not normally two you expect to see in the same sentence. Fortunately for us, it can happen.

We were delighted to accept an invitation from a friend of a friend to join her for dinner courtesy of a Groupon offer. Investigation of the hotel website in search of a map yielded no such practical information but instead suggested that hotel guests, having arrived at one of the London airports, should make their way to a mainline station and from there, travel by taxi to the hotel.

Dining in London is a always a special treat for us and we were excited as we caught the 4.35 train from Waterbeach, all dressed up and armed with a printout of a google map to make sure we wouldn’t get lost!

It was the first of the hot days of this strange summer of 2013 so we were warm by the time we arrived – and looking forward to our complimentary champagne cocktail!

There is no disputing the iconic character of the building, and I can imagine the thrill of first-time visitors to London arriving at the hotel.

The dining room is lovely: lofty, elegant, gracious and redolent of Edwardian tea dances with its soft gold colour scheme, graceful palms, classical columns, antiqued mirrors and enlargements of faded post-cards on the walls.

Staff were friendly and patient with us as we were more interested in talking than in perusing the menu. Champagne cocktails delivered and consumed, choices made and orders taken, we enjoyed the view and the conversation.

The food was competent if unadventurous. And, although the special fixed price menu was limited, there was enough choice for a vegetarian and a non-starch eater. My tomato and mozzarella salad was unremarkable and the risotto I had for my main course was just slightly short of perfectly-cooked. My husband’s first course of haddock followed by chicken fricassee were, he says, fine, although the fricassee was, he pronounced, more like a chasseur.

Desserts were predictable English fare: lemon tarte, Eton mess… all fine, if a little too sweet for my taste.

The wine list was surprisingly affordable and we enjoyed a bottle of Trebbiano Reggiano and lots of sparkling water!

So it was all pleasant enough and fantastic value as far as the Groupon special offer was concerned. However, on such a warm evening, I was a little surprised that the ventilation in the dining room seemed poor if not non-existent. There were, apparently, no fans and no air conditioning and having my own personal summer definitely marred my enjoyment of the full Waldorf dining experience.

All in all a very pleasant evening – lovely to spend it with friends in a beautiful old building. However, I would estimate, judging by the number of champagne cocktails being served, that the majority of other diners were also there as part of some special offer or other. And it was fantastic value for money at £25 per head for three courses plus the champagne cocktail!
While it was all just fine, it was nothing special. I am guessing that the hotel – at least the restaurant is resting on its ancient laurels while aiming to please tourists from out of town and out of the country who will be only too delighted to be served relatively traditional English fare in a elatively traditional English building only a stone’s throw away from their pick of London theatres. It would be lovely if they could restore the excellent food and excellent service that one might have expected from a hotel with Waldorf in its name.

The reputation that the Waldorf is 'glamorous' and 'opulent'. However, the reality does not live up to this. The cost of the stay is high and the size of room and facilities you receive are small. The standard of cleanliness in the en-suite was also below par. The staff, however, are incredibly helpful, welcoming and attentive.

Fantastic overall experience. Hotel is in a brilliant location close to Covent Garden and the theatres in the West End. Staff were extremely pleasant, welcoming and friendly from the concierge to the lovely young girl who cleaned our room. Breakfast was superb and served in a beautiful dining room. Wish we'd had time to sample the spa and will definitely do so if we visit again. Lovely ambience in the bar for cocktails after the theatre. Truly memorable trip.

Loved the location. Surrounded by the London theater district. Short walk to major sightseeing areas.

Rooms were Comfortable, Modern, and Good Size.

Nice breakfast in the morning.

Doorman was extremely helpful and friendly.

All in All a good place to stay while visiting London.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the street if you like a quieter room.

First rate location for those who like to be within walking distance of lots of things. Just minutes on foot to Trafalgar Square, Soho, British Museum and B'ham Palace grounds.
Tourist bus stop about a block away. Nearest Underground station a bit of a trek.
Staff very friendly, helpful and patient, especially with us daffy Americans.
Rooms very clean and well-appointed. Quiet at night.
Breakfast buffet has enough variety to satisfy all but folks with extreme dietary prejudices.
Hotel is top of the list for my next visit.

Room Tip: Top floor (7th or 8th, can't remember) rooms are interesting, but the elevator only goes to 6 or...

I booked regular room at a discounted price through Hotwire. Was placed on 7 th floor which was very different from other floors. Infact, you had to take lift to six floor and walk up to seventh. Whole floor looked like three star hotel. Room old and toilet did not work properly. Upgraded to suite and literally night and day. Was placed on third floor and room was perfect. I felt like I was in a completely different hotel. Had access to executive lounge which was incredible. Excellent food a drinks, a must have if you stay at this hotel. Location was perfect!!! Right in the heart of the theatre district. The only negative is hotel restaurants outrageously expensive and be careful when making phone calls. They charge anywhere from 2-5 pounds per minute for local calls. Found a few mistakes on my bill which they need a few hours to verify, but once it was my credit card was refunded. Will definately stay there again, but only in suite.

We have booke a 3 nigth stay in a Queen Hilton Guest Room.
With check in at 3:00 pm we expected to go directly to the room.
But when we arrived at 3:30pm the room was not ready yet.
The staff offered us a free drink from the bar witch we appriciated.
At 4 pm I went to ask for the room.
It was still not ready, but we could have another room.
It was an upgrade they said, new renovated Queen Hilton Guest Room. A + room.
We accepted.
But the room was wery small and the view was a grey brick wall 3 meters from the window only if you lean forward and look to the right you could se the sky and a backyard.
Not what I expect from a 5 star hotel and to a price of 200 GBP. a day.
But it was nicely renovated, clean and frech painted, so we decidet to stay.
But I still wonder how the original room looked like. If this was an update.
Breakfast was avarage standard, not 5 star.
The best thing to say about the hotel is the location, right next to the Covent Garden with all its restaurents, marked, cafees and theaters.
The Pool is a part of the fitness center witch is a puplic place.
So there is more people to share these facilities than expected.
All in All A 5 star hotel with 3 star facilities and standard.

Room Tip: Not room 132.
