We stayed at "No. 1 The Mansions" at 219 Earls Court Road, Kensington, for 11 days from late May to early June 2012. First the good things: the apartment building is well situated. No. 1 The Mansions is only 2 short blocks from the Earls Court Tube Station, which has direct service to Heathrow Airport. Between the apartment and the Tube station are: a Mark’s & Spencer food store, a food coop, a drug store, (Boots), a post office, a currency exchange (ICE), a Barclay’s branch, and several decent restaurants/pubs. Our apartment, (#5), was well stocked with bleach-white towels, and bed linens. My bed was quite comfortable. On the down-side, the carpet in our apartment was old & stained. Old & stained described the 2 sofa as well – in addition to being uncomfortable with cushions that continually needed re-adjusting. Thankfully, none of us had to sleep on the sofa-beds as their “mattresses” were mostly imaginary. The window blinds had to be ‘hand-rolled’, as the state of their operating chains had clearly stymied all previous occupants of the apartment. The washer/dryer combo seems to wash clothing sufficiently over its 1 hour (!) cycle, but it does NOT dry anything at all. (I absolutely agree with MauiRed’s comments that as a courtesy - do NOT run the washer at night as it shakes the floor to an alarming degree.)

I’m torn about the rating. I had such a wonderful vacation in London, that it may unduly influence my review of our apartment. I did try to continually remember that London is one of the most expensive cities in the world – and “No. 1 The Mansions” is not responsible for the poor currency exchange rate I had. I believe that if I were a Brit, the value for my monies & hence my rating of the apartment might have been higher.

Room Tip: The ground & first floor may have too much 'street' noise for you. The 6th floor does n...

We stayed for 12 nights on the fifth floor in apartment 5, facing a sidestreet. Unfortunately, the building directly across from us was undergoing renovations and was completely covered in scaffolding, plus the workmen were on-site and walking the scaffolding outside my bedroom window by 8 am every morning. If you are looking for a great London view, you may want to inquire about surrounding construction. As noted in other reviews, my initial impression after a 12-hour flight was a little disheartening, considering the price. The rooms were small and the furniture and carpet were dated and needed replacing. The sofa cushions sagged and kept slipping away from the frame, making it difficult to sit comfortably. One bedroom contained a double bed with very minimal/dated furnishings (small wicker stool, two wicker night stands, and wicker bureaus) and a hard mattress. The other room was very cramped with two twin beds, a vanity, and a bureau. My friends stayed in this room and found it difficult to maneuver around the beds and furniture with their luggage and shopping bags.

The kitchen was adequate, however, as noted in other reviews, the combo clothes washer/dryer was very noisy, shook the floor boards on the rinse cycle (don't run it at night as a courtesy for the room below you), and did not dry even the smallest of lingerie loads. Had to dry clothes on a clothes rack in the living room. Dishwasher powder and rinse aide were provided, however, no dishwashing liquid was provided for pots and pans. The sink faucet was loose and management was advised. We were informed the faucet would be repaired the next day but that did not happen. The mini refrigerator was broken, unbeknownst to us, and spoiled some of our food on the first day (when the weather was in the 80's). We had to lug our remaining food back and forth between another apartment until the maintenance man could replace the fridge on Monday, which he promptly did.

The bathroom was well appointed with a combo soaking tub/shower, tiled shower walls, and adequate counter space. The cabinet was well stocked with towels and toilet paper, and checked daily by the maid service. Only bar soap was provided for amenities in this room.

If you are bothered by noise, the creaking floor boards and street noise may take some adjustment. As in older buildings, I could hear the occupants above me walking back and forth across the floors. Having lived in other cities, the street noise did not bother me.

Throughout our trip, the staff were very responsive to our requests for services (extra fans in the room, transfers to the airport) and maintenance concerns. We happened to view room 4 one morning and it appeared better appointed with newer furniture and wood/laminate floors, plus more overall space. I would recommend that you speak directly with staff (rather than booking on line or relying solely on photos) if you have concerns about space, furnishings, etc.

As noted, the elevator (pull cage doors) is old and very small. I arrived separately from my friends so it was adequate for my single use with luggage, and also for us three travelers with our daily shopping. If you have a larger group with luggage, this may prove more of an effort requiring several trips. The wi-fi connection in our apartment worked extremely well for our two iPads and I was able to send emails and photos daily to friends. I also loved the convenience of numerous stores (drugstore, supermarket, photo store, post office) on the same street, as well as the Tube station and some wonderful restaurants.

In summation, I would stay here again. It did not quite meet expectations (especially when compared with price) but the central location and responsive staff were a delight.

Room Tip: It appears from other reviews that lower rooms may be larger and better appointed. Room 4 on the fi...

Very impressed with the 3 large bedrooms, kitchen including a washing machine and lounge/dining room. Security was excellent with key card access to the foyer and also to the apartment. Beds were comfortable and bathrooms were excellent. On the down side, some of the fittings were unserviceable (2 lights) or required repair (loose door handle and bathroom fitting). Good location 5 minutes from Earls Court station and close to restaurants and pubs. Would stay again.

I recently stayed at No.1 the Mansions with my husband and infant son. We booked a 2-bed, 2-bath apartment and were there for 3 nights. Overall, we had a good experience at The Mansions. However, there were a few notable negatives.

The first one was really to do with expectations. In looking at the promotional photos for The Mansions online, we had expected a good-sized apartment with elegant furnishings. When we arrived at our apartment, we were surprised with how small it was, and the quality of the furnishings were “shabby-chic” at best. Although in the end, the apartment itself was adequate, we couldn’t help but be disappointed when comparing to our expectations from the online photos. This also led us to feel that the apartment wasn’t great value for money. So… when booking, I would recommend you to ask for the details (size, location, etc.) of the apartment they’re allocating you, so you know what to expect. We stayed in apartment 13, which is on the 6th floor.

Our second negative was to do with the room location itself. As mentioned above, we were staying in an apartment on the 6th floor. Unfortunately, the lift only goes to the 5th floor, and we then had to walk down several hallways with firedoors to get to a set of stairs to take us up to our apartment. As we were staying with our son (which was mentioned to the staff upon booking), I would have expected the staff member to let us know about this quirk in our location. Trying to go up these stairs with a car seat, pram and our shopping was challenging at best, so had we known about the particulars of this apartment, we may not have booked it.

On the plus side, the apartment was comfortable and surprisingly quiet. There was some road noise, but nothing that kept us from sleeping. The kitchen came well-equipped, which was handy for having meals in. The location of the building is excellent… just down the road from Earl’s Court tube, and a short walk to Kensington, Fulham, Chelsea, etc. We went for walks every day… often through the beautiful Brompton Cemetery, which is only a couple minutes away.

Our overall experience was good… but had the price been slightly cheaper, and our expectations slightly lower, I think our experience would have been great.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the 6th floor.. the lift only goes to the 5th

Stayed as a group of 7 with my family in Dec 2011 for 7 nights...

Was tired after a 14 hrs flight, however was completely recharged upon reaching.. Even though we had to drag the luggage up to the 2nd floor...

Apartment 2B was beautifully decorated, like a perfect English mansion. Its not necessarily modern and the floors were creaking underneath the carpeting, but that only made it more homely.

Much laughter and meals were shared at the lovely dining area. Rooms had a lovely view of the garden, street. Comfy beds, though they were a little small. Housekeeping available too.

Very clean, and free WIFI was available. Noticed that the signals were stronger in the bathroom lol ;)

Location wise it was perfect, easily a 5 min walk to the countless shops, eateries, tube (Earls Court station).
The neighborhood was so pleasant, as were the people.

We didn't want to leave, EVER! Plans are already underway to stay there again on our next trip in 2013 :) highly recommend it!

We stayed a week at the Mansions Apartments in January this year and we were more than delighted with our choice of accommodation in London. It felt like home the minute we walked into the apartment. The apartment we stayed in is at the top floor, at the back of the building hence we did not have any issue wih traffic noise.

There is plenty of room for the four of us with the two bedrooms well placed at each end of the apartment with the lounge and dining room in the middle. The kitchen is spacious and adequately equipped with all the basic cooking utensils. The only draw back is the washing machine with built in dryer which does not dry well. However, the apartment has a very good cloth rack for drying and that has enable us to dry our washing daily without any fuss. We like the separate toilet and hand basin, a great asset when you have 4 people in the apartment. The place is well kept and the apartment is cleaned daily to a high standard.

The location is perfect for us with everything within easy reach. We walked every where and the surrounding area is full of interesting houses.

We would definitely stay there again the next time we visit London.

Room Tip: If noise is an issue then you need to ask for an apartment at the back of the building. Also with th...

We were a group of 10 and stayed for 6 nights in two apartments one on the 6th floor and one on the 1st. Both were well appointed and very comfortable. It was great being able to make breakfast before we set out for a full day of site-seeing and having a relaxing place to meet and to discuss the days events in the evening. The living room in the 1st floor flat was so big that all ten of us were comfortable meeting there to plan and relax. Kitchens were fully equipped. Bathrooms (two in each flat) had hair dryers, liquid soap and plenty of towels. Beds were comfy. Grocery stores were very convenient to use. We did not find 1st floor too noisy as mentioned by others. In fact it was quite nice being able to watch the passers-by. The location is great and convenient to the tube and the neighborhood is very nice. We would definitely stay there again. The staff was helpful and pleasant.

Room Tip: Apartment 1B on first floor is large with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and large living/dining room and separ...
