“Good location, basic accommodation”
Reviewed February 17, 2014

We stayed for 3 nights in early February. Ideal location, 5 minutes walk from Euston Station and about 20 minutes walk to Oxford Street. Especially helpful as we visited during the 2 day tube strike.

Having booked online, we specifically requested a quiet room away from traffic noise, so were disappointed to be allocated a room overlooking the busy Euston Road with its associated traffic noise (day and night), plus the fact that the hospital (UCL) was immediately opposite, with sirens blaring at regular intervals. Although the windows were double glazed, this did not keep the noise out. The room itself was warm (with air conditioning when required), but the bathroom was unheated and very cold.

My partner could not reach the hangers in the wardrobe. I could only reach them on tiptoe. There were no chairs provided in the room, and the TV was in such a position that it was not possible to watch from the bed.

Breakfast was included but continental only. We used the excellent Speedy's Café just down the road for a full cooked breakfast after the first day.

Room Tip: Demand a room away from the traffic noise if you want to sleep !

Their advertisements promote their decor as "minimalist". This is "truth in advertisement"! While "minimal" does not always mean "small", in this case it does! Their rooms are small; their bathrooms are small; their furnishings are small; their amenities are small. And, worse of all, their "service" is as minimal as it gets. Some of their personnel are friendly and thoughtful, but their desk personnel (the main people you have to deal with) are NOT! If you are paying by cash or credit card, and only want a place to sleep, you might be minimally satisfied with this property. But if you book in advance through some system other than their own (e.g., travel agent, expedia, etc.), be prepared for for lots of questions and some difficulties (amazing how English isn't English when communicating in cases like these). It is however nicely located and has fairly reasonable rates.

I needed a hotel close to Euston Station and to Triton Street, where my course was, so this hotel was absolutely ideal, being equidistant between the two - five minutes walk to both destinations.
Unfortunately, the location was one of the few redeeming features of the hotel.

I was welcomed at reception. The direction of the restaurant and lifts were indicated. I then had to prove who I was, by providing some ID with my name on it. To save confusion when you check-in, I would make sure you take a credit card or something else which matches the name that the room was booked under.

I then used the lift to get to my room (320). This was a small square room, with two windows, an enclosed free-standing wardrobe with 10 hangers in it, a double bed next to the wardrobe, with a bedside table at the other side. There was a cupboard with a kettle and tea/coffee/milk (no biscuits) and the TV was on this cupboard. Basic elements but OK.

The bed was very soft and had a definite sag in the middle of it. I was staying here alone, but had I brought my wife, I am sure we would have had trouble with 'roll-together' in the middle.

The radiator was next to the bedside table, and had a faulty thermostat - the thermostat assembly turned round so it was nigh on impossible to switch it off or turn it up with any degree of confidence as to what the heat level was going to be. There was an air con unit above the entrance door which I didn't test.

The bathroom was tiny. It had a tiny sink with a cracked bowl - the crack did not go through the sink so it was water-tight. This had one of those push and release plugs which is meant to keep water in the bowl, for a wash etc. The plug didn't work. Even when it was in its supposed 'closed' position, water still trickled out. On the second morning, I had to keep the water running into the bowl to have a wet shave. And I couldn't physically stand in front of the sink to wash my face as there wasn't enough room - I had to stand with my bottom in the bathroom doorway!

As regards the water, the hot water was incredibly hot, almost dangerously hot and there literally should be a warning about this in the bathroom to prevent potential injury to guests.

The shower had a bi-fold door which didn't close properly when you were using the shower, and had a make-shift hinge secured by two ill-fitting screws at the top and bottom. The shower gel and shampoo containers were on the wall next to the shower controls, which reduced the tiny shower to being incredibly small, especially as the door would not close.

No instructions were provided for the shower, and the control for hot/cold had no indication as to which way was hot. The water pressure was not good, but it was adequate.

The sliding door into the bathroom didn't work properly - it closed fine but you needed to 'help it' by pushing it open with your foot at the bottom.

The top of the wardrobe had more dust on it than I would have expected for a regularly cleaned room.

The blinds, which are built into the double glazed units, did not provide a good level of darkness when they were closed. I need darkness to have a good nights' sleep and would have preferred there to be a blackout blind or curtains in addition to the blinds.

The cooked breakfast is £6.50 extra - a continental breakfast is included in the room rate. My recommendation regarding the cooked breakfast - AVOID! It consists of a large straight sausage, 2 pieces of salty bacon, a fried tomato, and your choice of egg. I chose scrambled egg - what I got was not a lovely fluffy textured yellow hot mass - it looked like a poached egg which had been chopped up.

As regards the continental breakfast, there is muesli/cornflakes/crunchy nut, a good choice of meat, cheese, croissants, pastries, sweet muffins, white/brown bread, butter/Flora and preserves. The toaster is very slow but it does produce good coloured toast on the first pass. Tea and coffee are also available. Watery juice is also on offer.

The breakfast times are 7.00 to 9.30 though it says this starts at 7.30 according to the information on the TV.

As regards the TV, the middle button on the TV remote was missing, so I had to use the 'joystick' as a metal stick.

When I wanted to boil the kettle, I used a plug near the entrance door, and the socket sounded like it was sparking. I used another socket which worked fine.

As you can gather with the above description, Euston Square Hotel will not be on my list of preferred accommodation when I return to London in the future. It has the potential to be an excellent hotel, with its location and the cost of rooms, but the above issues make it somewhere I would regrettably be looking to avoid in future.

Pros:
Clean facilities, good beds and very friendly staff, great location in proximity to subway, bus and railway station, parks, great shopping, dining, and culture. Almost everything is easily within a walking distance. The breakfast is continental, i.e. no frills, but again, the staff is soooo nice and friendly that it compensated easily for the narrow breakfast choice.

Cons:
The rooms are a pure lottery. (Yes, the rooms a tiny - but remember, you are in central London, so that's normal). Worse even, several of those rooms are designed for someone over 190 cm tall - no chance to use the shelves and coat hangers without a ladder. A shower head in some rooms can only be used in some weird yoga position - it is located very high and rotation is barely possible so that water flows toward the wall. Perhaps this was thought as a desinger waterfall, not a shower - who knows.

Overall, I found it not a bad value for money. Would stay here again, if necessary.

Stayed here for theatre weekend . Travelled down by train and hotel only a short walk from station and underground next door. Reception staff very pleasant and attentive. Good continental breakfast included with lots of choice and definitely no need to go away still feeling hungry. Hotel is next to busy road but double glazing kept out majority of the noise and we actually weren't in the hotel very much - too much to see and do in London. The room was a tad small but probably on a par with most London city centre hotels in similar price range. Would definitely consider staying here again.

Nice clean place, in a nice location, right near the Euston Subway/Tube. It is also near the train station. The place is a bit noisy because of the traffic outside. However, the staff were very nice and helpful. Styling is contemporary and minimalist, but absolutely fine. Breakfast is included and is substantial enough to start a day of touring!

Room Tip: There is no Swimming pool or fitness center - I clicked on them by accident and don't know how t...
