Sotheby's Auction House sets the prices and the trends for fine art and objects around the world. It is the center of the art world and no other auction house ranks near it in importance. Yet it is also surprisingly welcoming and accessible even to tourists who have no intention of buying art. On a recent visit I enjoyed an excellent Banksy exhibit and saw a spectacular work by Damian Hirst, two of the most famous contemporary artists in the world. The guards smiled and welcomed me in graciously, and when I asked if I could take photos of the artwork, they smiled and said of course. For art-loving tourists looking for something a little different and yet quite authentic, Sotheby's is a must-see.
