I'm a "friend" of the Royal Academy and love visiting the exhibitions - the current David Hockney exhibition is outstanding - one of the best ever - in one of the rooms we felt as if we could almost step into the paintings and walk amongst the trees - we're going to have to go back for a second visit.

After viewing the exhibition we wanted to buy some cards and prints from the shop - very annoyingly the RA starts to dis-assemble the shop with almost indecent and somewhat impolite haste before the shop closing time (virtually knocking folk aside as the shop displays are wheeled away) - although the shop closing time is clearly displayed, folk viewing the exhibits towards the end of the day (as we were) have virtually no time in which to make any purchases - why not keep the shop open for 20 or 30 minutes after the exhibit rooms have closed (therefore generating more revenues for the RA) rather than the disregard and rudeness to visitors currently displayed?

Reason for visit to London was to see the Hockey exhibition. Wow! Worth a hard bed in Bayswater and every penny. Amazing! Just shows that age is not an impediment.

The permanent collection is ok but the RA is renowned for its special exhibitions of the greatest art in the world. And of course the Summer Exhibition, which is more hit and miss.

The RA stages the best art exhibitions in London but be sure to book in advance or you may queue all day

The David Hockney Exhibition was one of the best I have experienced. Outstanding and fascinating, this should not be missed. The restaurant offers a well balanced menu just enough for lunch before or after viewing.
