It's seen better days. If you want to catch a train then both Kings X and St Pancras have been done up and are much improved. There are plenty of hotels but few decent restaurants and it is not a very attractive part of London.

Yes, Kings Cross is fairly grungy. Was just there for a week, saw only 1 prostitute *at least she looked like one, :-)*. But there is sooooo much development going on, and I do believe, it does get better. Just a short tube stop away is Faringdon, which is definitely up and comer, and by the looks of the cars there, fairly wealthy. Lots of Americans living there, we were told. But back to KC. There is so much work going on at St Pancras and the Kings Cross station to make it much nicer, and I think the neighborhood will soon follow. Didn't have problems at night, and we would get back to our hotel (Comfort Inn KC) around 11 or midnight. I would be careful, just as anyone would be careful walking around at night anywhere, be it in Chicago, Milwaukee or Montreal or any big city, like sticking to the main streets and away from alleyways. Then again, maybe we were just fortunate to have a good experience. The big plus was that KC/St. P's is central to so many tube lines and rail, to take you all over London....from zone 1 through zone 6. Most of your travel will likely be in zone 1 and 2, though.

The Kings Cross area of London has a well deserved bad reputation. In the area you have prostitutes, drug dealers, junkies and beggars. During the day the area is not so bad with a few things in the area to do HOWEVER I would recommend caution, especially in the evening and KNOW where you are going. You have London Underground and three railway stations in the area (kings cross, St. Pancras and Thameslink). Exercise a little common sense, if you do have to ask for directions, ask someone who works in a store or at one of the train stations.....try not to ask people in the street because there is a risk you could get unlucky.
The upside is it is a good area to get around London and the tube station there is one of the biggest with 6 lines running through. There is also the extensive bus network, with buses running to most places in London including the 91 which runs to Trafalgar Square where you can then get a bus to ANYWHERE in London (that route is 24/7).
You also have Camley Street Natural Park which is located just off Pancras Road about a 5 minute walk from St Pancras Station. In York Way is the Courtyard Theatre and the area is good for low cost, brand hotels (Travel Inn, Travel Lodge, Holiday Inn etc...)
All I will say is use a little common sense and exercise caution and your stay in the Kings Cross area can and will be a safe one.
