Owner description: Somerset House is a spectacular neo-classical building in the heart of London, sitting between the Strand and the River Thames. During summer months 55 fountains dance in the courtyard, and in winter you can skate on London's favourite ice rink. Somerset House also hosts open-air concerts and films, contemporary art, design and fashion exhibitions, family workshops and free guided tours of spaces usually hidden to visitors. The Trust's mission is to conserve and maintain Somerset House to the highest standards and to develop the site as a public space which is universally recognised as a world class visitor attraction and centre of excellence for culture and the arts.

Are you the least bit interested in photography, visit Sony World Photography Awards 2015.The exhibition is just right in size. Nice restaurant and cafe in the building.

I booked tickets through Groupon to the Sony World Photograph Awards and timed our visit to coincide with the free Old Palaces Tour on a Tuesday. The tickets are available on the day only, and cannot be booked ahead. After I booked my place on this tour I went into the Sony Photographs display in both the East and West Wing. The pictures are amazing, from across the world and from all different ages of entrants, plus there are various videos to watch along the way with the most powerful being the film about the Ebola Crisis - heart wrenching.
We took a break for a drink and snack and watched the world go by in the courtyard before visiting the Maggi Hambling Exhibition in the Inigo Rooms, East Wing with a very powerful display of paintings, sculptures and music - another interesting thought provoking display.
Next we joined the Old Palaces Tour at 2.15 pm, where we were told about the fascinating history of Somerset House from the original Tudor Palace in the 16th century, sadly all now gone, to the current buildings. We were taken to parts of Somerset House not normally open to visitors, such as the mysterious underground tombs of the 17th century royal courtiers and a nearby Roman Baths. Our tour guide is very knowledgeable and made the talk very interesting.
Somerset House is a very interesting place to visit with a very full program of things to see and do - well worth a visit.

Somerset House regularly hosts some great exhibitions, many of which are free, I recently attended the Sony Photography Awards and the Secret 7" exhibition, both were fantastic. They also have a beautiful, tranquil courtyard and host some great gigs in the Summer too - see whats on and check it out.

My friend and I really enjoyed this event. We went on a Saturday and managed to escape the queues. We are both interested in photography but have never really taken it up properly. I learnt a lot from this exhibition. The youth entrys were my favourite. We spent around 1.5-2 hours there but could have spent longer.
