“Nice Hotel, great location”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

We stayed here for a night having booked a good deal with Last Minute. The Hotel itself is lovely and the staff we met were helpful and friendly. We were in room 516 which to be honest was very small. It was nicely furnished though and as we had a cheap deal with Last Minute.com we were fine with it. However if we had paid full price I would have been slightly disappointed. The bed was lovely and comfortable and the complimentary mini bar is a nice touch. The shower in the bathroom had good pressure but the bathroom itself could do with a bit of a facelift, it was starting to look a bit tired. All in all though a nice hotel in a really good location for shopping on oxford street etc.

We stayed on the 5th of november 2012 for one night, our first impressions were great, lovely building in top location, right accross the road from Green Park and the Queen! The doorman was lovely as were all the welcoming staff. We were really impressed but mildy let down by our deluxe room after seeing the best of the hotel, there was nothing wrong with it but nothing deluxe either, just a standard double. For what we paid through secret escapes we were very happy but had we paid the full £500 for the night we would have felt dissapointed. The room was very clean and modern with all the facilities expected including free soft drinks and snacks from the minibar as promised. The bathroom was nice to look at ( what with all the mirrors!) but the bath was quite small and not as clean as I would have hoped for 5star.
The spa was basic, two wooden barrels for tubs and a sauna and steam room, the bathing barrells (hot tubs) felt dirty and slimy, not of a spa quality let alone 5star, but fine none the less.
Beds were very comfy, no complaints and were made down for the evening.
We had our breakfast included which was great, lovely set up and well presented which lots of variety but for £27pp It was nothing special and I wouldnt have wanted to pay for it, however the fresh friut was great and the freshly squuezed orange was fantastic but dont expect refills to be offered on drinks or coffee.
The staff were friendly and helpful and do allow you to leave your bags once you have checked out, Overall a great stay but I would not pay the full price for this. Its a great hotel and was a lovely break but didnt live up to its 5star reviews. Deluxe room pictures added.
M&D

Room Tip: Deluxe room is really just a double, use secret escapes for the best rates.

Made two separate bookings by last minute - first room was miniscule positioned at the rear of the hotel and was dark and gloomy due to a office block wall very close by. There was nowhere to hang bathrobe in the bathroom and the shower flooded everywhere. Felt a little embarrassed as I was meeting up with a colleague I hadn't seen for ten years and I had made the booking. Hotel was full so we couldn't move. Room on second booking was much better and myself and partner were upgraded to a street view room which was bigger. Bathroom didn't flood. Probably a hotel best experienced in the summer when the garden room and grounds can be appreciated. Bar service not great had to wait 15 mins for attention. Reception staff and doorman very congenial. Nice hotel but certainly wouldn't get a fabulous rating from me.

Room Tip: Rear room dark and pokey

The hotel staff are all very nice and helpful. The twin room was small but very comfortable and designed cleverly to give an illusion of space. Unlike other London hotels it did not feel stuffy. The free mini bar was an added bonus.

Stayed at the Athenaeum for an anniversary treat. As per usual, booked via discount website for an excellent rate. Managed to get upgraded to a front view room - they can be noisy but bigger/better aspect than rooms at the rear of the hotel. The hotel is very convenient for central London: theatre, restaurants, sights, etc. Ordered room service several times which was of a higher than normal standard for hotels; albeit on the usual pricey side. We liked the free mini bar idea (non alcohol) but would prefer lower rates instead. Despire ordering an anniversary treat, there was no acknowledgement from the hotel or additional treat eg rose petals on the bed. Front reception were efficient but not particularly helpful or friendly. Overall would highly recommend for a well priced 5 star hotel in London with a boutique feel.

Room Tip: Request upgrade

What can i say about this wonderful hotel & staff? We were visiting London to celebrate our wedding anniversary & were greeted by doorman jim & shown to reception. The reception then wished us a happy anniversary & we were treated to an upgrade (a beautiful room overlooking Green Park). In the room we found a cake with the message Happy Anniversary (nice touch).Room was spotlessly clean, and all facilities in the room were excellent (free snacks, coffee, etc).Breakfasts were to die for and staff couldnt do enough for you.We will definitely be returning to this Gem of a hotel. Thank you for making our stay so wonderful.

We have been to London 4 times in the last 3 yrs and have stayed at the Athenaeum each time. Three times in the apts on Down St and once in a room overlooking the Park. Either option is fabulous. The attention to our personal needs has rarely been experienced in our travels! They provide requested games! Etc for your children and on one trip for my husband's birthday arranged a cake for our in-room celebration. The location is extremely convenient to sites, restaurants and shopping. Our favorite restaurant is only a few blocks away into the heart of Mayfair - L'Autre - serving polish and Mexican cuisine - trust me it is excellent. The access to the underground is also very convenient. Can't wait for our next visit in only a few weeks!

Room Tip: Stay in the apartments for a feeling of living in London and try the little coffee shop across the s...
