We found that the cafe in the entrance court was the only one open early on Exhibition Road. Good quality pastries and coffee at a not too bad price. Oh, and the museum was very good indeed.

Overall, this is an excellent museum and *most* exhibits were pretty well curated. The historical exhibits, such as the Ware bed, and the Tudor period sections, were very well done and quite interesting. There are some fascinating pieces here that were a fun surprise - like the embroidery by Mary of Scots.
However, the only reason I wouldn't rate this as excellent is that parts of the museum are just...odd. I would call these parts poorly curated. Maybe it was done on purpose to be "fun" and "quirky" but frankly, I found it a bit confusing and a little exhausting. The odd exhibit overlayed with the furniture gallery was just weird and frankly, I didn't care for the melange of styles. The costume section was right after the older exhibits, which again, just felt off, though admittedly the costume exhibit was well done, as was the jewelry exhibit.
It is a rather difficult museum to navigate and the signs are not great. We walked in circles trying to find the Leighton works and still only saw one mural. I overhead others having the same difficulty. The fascinating Beatrix Potter exhibit was shoved down a corridor with no signs at all - we were lucky we stumbled across it.
Many of the paintings seem to have been arranged without much thought, or some curator was trying to be "artsy" but really it just made things a bit overwhelming.
Overall, this is *definitely* worth a visit, but be aware that signage is confusing and exhibits can feel like an incoherent jumble at times.

Beautiful exhibits on show! We loved all of the different cultures that were all presented and awe especially loved the Eastern exhibits which my husband especially appreciated, given his origins. :D
