“Viking Exhibition - far too crowded”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

The exhibition was far too crowded, especially at the start and this really spoiled the experience.
Although the long boat was very impressive, the early exhibits were not of Viking artifacts, but from neighbouring contemporary cultures. Interesting, but we were really coming to learn about the vikings.
The majority of the exhibits did not have a wow factor and this exhibition has not deepened or changed my opinion of viking culture. I was disappointed.

Of course the museum as a whole is fantastic, but this exhibition was very poor.

“Vikings: 'Life and Legend'”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

We love the British Museum, and, as members, try to visit as many of the major exhibitions as possible.

I was very excited about the Vikings coming to London (!) and the items on display are remarkable, breathtaking, and absolutely wonderful. However, the amount of people allowed in at any one time is detrimental to being able to see and appreciate what is on show. There are excruciatingly slow moving queues before each cabinet, and this quickly becomes very frustrating. The signage is very low down, in a small font, and you need to be right in front of it to read it - which was very difficult indeed. We missed seeing most of the objects in the first room as we couldn't get anywhere near the cabinets, so gave up and moved on to the next room.

It was easier in the area where the warship is, so we spent more time in there as we could actually read and appreciate the fabulous artifacts. I particularly loved the 'killed swords'.

We thought the Pompeii exhibition last year was crowded, but it was nothing compared to the crush in this exhibition. Such a shame.

“Viking Exhibition”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

Expecting to be disappointed after reading reviews but was pleasantly surprised, Had booked
tickets online for the 6.30 slot but my son arrived late. This was no problem - the staff let him in. Staff were not officious but accommodating and helpful. Displays were informative and easy to negotiate among the crowds. There were plenty of gaps and people made way for each other. A thoroughly worthwhile couple of hours.

“Fabulous Musuem”

This museum has great collections of artifacts around the world. We only spent 2 hours there, but could have spent more. Come in the morning to avoid the crowd. This museum really makes history alive!

I won't go on and on, as there are a million other reviews of the BM, but I will say that this has got to be the finest object museum in the world.

We stayed for 2 1/2 hours, as there's a point at which your brain becomes unable to absorb anything more (I've heard this called 'museum head'). In that time, we visited the Enlightenment Gallery (my husbands favourite, I think, as he loves libraries), Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece & Rome, Middle East, 'Living & Dying', and Asia. We also stopped in the cafe and a couple of shops. We weren't rushed, so I'd say that as long as you're focused, you can see quite a bit in a short period of time.

It's just an incredible feeling to be surrounded by such pricelessness. I came to London specifically to visit the British Museum again, and felt very satisfied by my time there. If you enjoy history and learning, this is one place you absolutely cannot miss when you visit London.
