I went, hoping to see much of what I learned in books and on-line, live, in front of me. I was not disappointed. One cannot see everything in one visit. This is a magnificent collection, even more impressive to me than the MET in NY, and that is hard to beat. The museum floors are large and airy, easy to read displays. Their Egyptian collection includes the ROSETTA STONE; it is a humbling experience standing next to it (only HAMMURABI's CODE in the Louvre had a greater impact on me). Pharaonic statues, busts, different pagan images and fetishes, peasant artifacts from 3,000 years ago, etc. really make it possible to dare imagine life in those times. The Near Eastern section is just as impressive. Great care was taken to surround the visitor with enough wall images, (Lachish Room is a great example), walls of ancient palaces and temples, large winged bulls, etc. to once again get some sort of feel for the difference in cultural expression of the varied empires. These civilizations that have long since been discarded on the waste heap of history but the museum allows one to appreciate the grandeur of ages past. I have not even spoken of the Persian Rooms ... Allow yourself at least two half day visits. Too many hours at any museum is exhausting, even one as great as this one.

I visited for the first time in some years to see the Pompeii exhibition which was excellent (pre-booking essential). We shall have to go back and see some more of the permanent collections. Lots of high quality souvenir shops. I'd also recommend the Gallery Cafe on the ground floor, a bit less hectic than the one in the Great Court.

There is so much to see here. It is great! The mummies alone are worth the visit. This museum also has the actual Rosetta stone. This was our second trip to London, and we went back for a second visit.

This is a wonderful museum with something for everyone. Free entrance allows you to see everything from the rosetta stone and egyptian mummies to the sutton hoo collection the vindolanda letters and mu h more. The central court is an amazing light space with an amazing roof and provides a place to sit and relax between halls. Would recommend the pompeii and herculaneum exhibition. Really interesting and well worth the ticket price you pay for this part of the museum. Went to spend a couple of hours was there all day and still could have spent more time. It is busy but take your time and you will have a great day.

We liked looking at the Egyptian section and the Greek Statues. There is so much to see, you need at least 2 full days there.
