This museum is immense. And that means that there is always something new to discover around the next corner or in the next room. Take your pick on what you would like to discover today and go for it. The temporary exhibitions are usually great and worth the fee, so if there is any interesting one on you should not miss it.

The shops are also excellent if you like history since there are lots of nice things to buy, whatever your pricerange. But since shopping isn't what this museum is about do devote your time to the amazing collections of the museum.

I went to see the British Museum on a Saturday with my daughter aged 7 to help her with the work she was doing on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece at school. Got there at about 10ish, busy but not too packed and the exhibits are absolutely breathtaking. She loved it, saw all the statues etc on the ground floor first then had lunch and when upstairs to see the mummies etc.
Only criticism I would have is that it isn't really designed for younger kids, there were a few 'hands on' areas where you could learn about coins and one about flint tools but there is only so much that a 7 year old can look at in glass cabinets without getting bored and I would have liked it to be a bit more interactive. Still it was a great museum, great exhibits and a must see for any school project, but kids could only really handle at most about 2 hours here.

Bring a camera, it is a long museum so you might be there for a good couple of hours but do to worry they have a bar on the bottom and top floor so that's good ;)
