Make sure you go on a Beefeater tour! They make it interesting and fun! It really helped that we had a London Pass to avoid any lines. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the crowds weren't too bad. The line for the crown jewels was long but they keep it moving nicely

I arrived at the Tower in the afternoon - during the week. I started to join a tour - but it was so crowded - that only the closest people could hear the explanations. The activities program was not very clear . Seeing the crown jewelry was unique - but standing in line to enter was much longer than actually seeing the jewelry.
The visitor's map was not so helpful on organizing the visit on the Tower. I pretty much felt I lost the time for very little experiences.

On arrival we realised we were just in time for one of the complimentary Beefeater tours so we were taken round and heard stories of the all the highlights and lowlights in the tower's history by a fantastic guide who had the whole crowd eating out of the palm of his hand - definitely made the trip for us. Crown jewels were good, wasn't so impressed with the armouries display, but suits of armour aren't really my thing. Torture chamber could do with a bit more, but overall a really good day out.

We really enjoyed walking the grounds and taking in the crown Jewels. We got some great views of Tower Bridge from the walkway on the south side. It was interesting to see all the historic 'graffitti' from the prisoners that were held there. It wasn't overly crowded so this added to our enjoyemnt

Maybe we shouldn't have gone in June with hoards of tourists but the queue for the Crown Jewels was far longer than the attendants optimistic 30 minutes. Pity as the rest of the afternoon was spent seeing the other sites which were excellent
