Visited here TWICE on a recent trip to London. Spitalfields has been an active market since the 1600s---first populated with Huguenot silk weavers, then followed by Irish weavers in the 1700s. You can still see lovely houses in the area with glassed in rooms on the uppermost floors where they did their weaving. The market is packed with unique vendors. My favorites were the handmade shoe craftsman and the lovely linen clothing stalls. Weekdays are good (quiet-ish); weekends are packed with more vendors and people. Great restaurants and unique shopping surrounds the area including Flying Tiger (Copenhagen), Joseph Cheaney (UK handmade shoes), Uniglo, Anthropologie, and many others. Beautiful venue for shopping---a must do!!

Visited here on a Friday morning, and it was fantastic. Spitalfields has been an active market since the 1600s, and the area was once home to Huguenot silk weavers (1600s)--and Irish weavers who followed in the 1700s. Lots of unique vendors and goods---and the surrounding area is chock full of great shopping and restaurants (Uniglo, Joseph Cheaney handmade shoes, Flying Tiger (Copenhagen), Anthropologie, and many unique gift stores). I especially liked the wares made by a unique handmade shoe craftsman and numerous vendors selling interesting (and cheap!) linen clothing. On the historic side of things, you can still see lovely houses in the area once inhabited by the silk weavers with brightly lit large glassed areas on the uppermost floors--where their weaving was done.
I returned on a Sunday afternoon, and the market was even busier (and more packed) with great vendors and great finds. If you like a different shopping experience in an interesting venue, this is a must do.

Walked from Benthal Green down Brick Lane and ended up here having a coffee. From the grit to great. The markets here were new fashion. I really liked it

This was our third visit and in just a few years it seems to have changed for the worse. It seems that two large areas that had been filled with a wide variety of booths with vendors and unique goods have been replaced by large, permanent 2 floored structures with offices, restaurants and chain-like stores! Most of the table-type vendors seemed to focus on clothing and jewelry with a just a very few unique goods. The food choices now seem much greater, but my wife and family don't go to such markets just to eat and buy stuff we can get many other places. There were almost no antiques and the few unique items were not that unusual. I'm really puzzled. Do we remember something that never was, or did they change it over the last 4-5 years?
