The London Tube network is one of the most extensive and oldest in the world. Along with the other modes of transport (eg. bus, light rail, ferry) it does get you everywhere in and around London.

However, some stations and lines badly need a refresh or an upgrade. Some of their practices of doing maintenance work during the weekends leave a lot to be desired. I have unfortunately planned a route months ahead on travelling just three stations, but it turned out that the line was closed on that ONE day for track work. I ended up having to change trains twice before reaching my destination, and it took three times as long. I wish there was a bus that would get me there but that was not suggested by station attendants.

Tip: If you get an Oyster Card, you can get a full refund when you leave London - you must do this at a ticket office. Prepare to line up for a long time, unless you will return to London soon. Allow extra time if you are catching a plane or a train afterwards.

As time passed I now prefer riding on a bus to see the streets. But when you have to go fast from one point t another the tube is the best option.

Every stop is extremely clean and well marked. Download the "Embark LDN" app on smartphone and it will guide you through exactly where and when you need to be anywhere. The trains are on time, clean and safe. Amazing system. If you want WiFi underground you will need to purchase a Virgin Mobile $20 one month pass. I made do without it with no issues....
Overall - a high point of visiting London and getting around.

Make sure to get the Oyster Card to save lots of money. The tube is faster and easier to navigate than the bus. If you have kids, you can get an all day ticket for them for £3.50
