“Good hotel great location but expensive.”
Reviewed October 3, 2011

I had no problems staying at this hotel, except maybe it takes a bit of walking to get to the rooms. The Barlow rooms were modern and clean of a decent size. Only problem with this place is the price. Even at its cheapest it is about 180+ GBP plus tax. The SPA is located in another part of the building and you would have to traverse the lobby if you want to check it out, not a real problem. Food is not cheap, in London they have a weird tray charge that they tag on top of service and taxes. But the quality was decent/good. I followed previous reviewers and asked for rooms facing the library which was great, no noise from trains. You can hear the occasional low rumble but hardly noticeable. As a person who is very particular about noise, cleanliness etc. I cannot fault this hotel in any way. If you can get a good deal on this hotel I would highly recommend it.

Booked a tripe room for my madam, my adult teen daughter and I for 3 nights, i.e., Sept 15-18, 2011 which cost me GP 1,218.00. I was very disappointed for the following reasons:

1. The room was at the ground level, at the vey far end of the corridor. It was almost 6-7 minute walk from the hotel main door entrance. In addition, the room was noisy because of its proximity to the underground train station. The tube noise was very audible.
2. We expected a single proper bed for our adult daughter and not cot, spring low level one. We complained and was replaced the 2nd night.
3. There was no adequate supply of towels, shampoo etc and we had to call Room Service re the shortage.
4. The supplied steamed type iron was defective causing water to pour out form the water supply inlet and splashed a trouser causing a large stain. Room service should have made it a hobbit of checking/replacing room defective appliances whenever guest check out.
5. Although we were 3 in the room, the supply of tea & coffee was also limited to 2 persons only as they kept 2 items of each: 2 tea bags, 2 instant Nescafe, 2 cream milk etc.
6. The service at the hotel lobby was rather slow for a 4* hotel

For such a high tag price, I won’t recommend it as it was not worth it.

Room Tip: Reject staying at ground level and insist on higher levels.

Ideal for an early morning Eurostar but other merits are less clear; expensive.
Barlow rooms are standard hotel fare; clean & comfortable. Good & quiet if inward facing; ie against the outside wall of the station. Albeit dark.
Service is good but some staff are still learning the ropes.
Good overall ambiance.
It is not clear why this has a 5 star rating - more like 3+ or 4 at best.

Room Tip: Take a Barlow - inward facing if you want to sleep.

We stayed in the Chambers Wing (first floor) and our room was visually stunning. 16ft high ceilings, beautiful full height windows, a massive fireplace - the restoration has been a real success. We asked to be taken to our room via the Grand Staircase, and the sense of occasion and grandeur didn't disappoint. The room we stayed in did "atmospheric restored" old with "everything works" new beautifully. The only niggles are on service. While the idea of the Chambers Club is excellent, it felt very much like it was early days and the staff were as yet unused to the routine and the lay-out of the place. Over breakfast, food kept running out, tables stayed uncleaned, cutlery and napkins seemed to be in short supply, it was chaotic and didn't feel very "5 star". If the aim was to give the experience of a mid-level railway station restaurant experience, it worked :) Now the staff were trying very hard, this is not the fault them, but 2 people on waiter duty at peak time seemed woefully understaffed. It was a similar experience with our room service order - it took a very long time to arrive, and a very long time after we called for our trays to be taken away. Having said that, the bar adjacent to the Gilbert Scott is just perfect - great atmosphere, superb bar staff, cocktails just like they should be. This hotel has a lot, an incredible amount, to commend it and is probably one of the best looking city hotels anywhere going, but there are a few creases in delivery which need ironing out.

Room Tip: Stay in the Chambers Wing.

This is one of the nicest hotels I have visitied in my travels to Europe from the States. The lobby is a bit difficult to find from St Pancras (through the Booking Office restaurant). Lobby, grand staircase and restaurants on site are stunning. Check-in personel and concierge were great. We did not get a room in the Chambers Club, but our room was modern, spacious and clean....although our window view was St Pancras roof. Had fantastic breakfast in the Booking Office each day. Food and service were top notch. Very convenient for getting around town on the tube, which we took from Heathrow on the Piccadilly Line. This saved a lot of money over a cab, but was about an hour ride. Stay here if you have the chance. You won't be dissappointed.

I stayed in the St. Pancras Renaissance with a friend as a treat. It has an ideal location right by St Pancras station and just across the road are buses to all over parts of London, for me it was ideal as the Waterloo station bus stops right across the road. We chose to stay here because I watched something on TV about the hotel when it re-opened after so long and it has an interesting history. The grand staircase that was where the original hotel entrance was (when it was called The Midland Grand), is still there now and leads up to some of the guest rooms. It's hard to believe that they were going to demolish this whole building before they got around to completely re-building it into a hotel again. I don't know why it took so long to do it, because the new re-vamped hotel has turned out to be wonderful.
I booked twin beds room direct via the hotel web site, as I have a Mariott Rewards card. The room itself was rather average size and the bathroom was very small, but the beds were extremely comfortable and as I requested, we were on a high floor (6th floor and there are 7 floors altogether). The staff were friendly and I got checked in promptly, alrhough I had to wait about 15 minutes for somebody to be free because it was general check-in time for everyone.
Breakfast was not included in the room rate and we didn't have it, so I've no idea what the food is like here, but I spoke to a few other guests who said it is very good. Some five star hotels in central London are £300 for the cheapest room, yet they have extra charges for guests to use the spa facilities which really annoys me, thank God that this hotel doesn't do that and the swimming pool, steam room and sauna is complimentary use for guests. I didn't have any treatments and they all looked very expensive from the tariff list I was given. I had a £30 voucher given to me which was included in the room rate, but the cheapest facial that was quoted as lasting 30 minutes was around £60-70. Rather a lot for something I could get for a lot less elsewhere.
The pool area here is like a Roman bath, with coloured lights. It's very relaxing and quiet and not many other people were around when I went swimming. The spa facilities are located in the basement. Bath robes and slippers are provided in the rooms and in the changing room lockers. I thought it was very clean, very efficient and staff were very helpful.
I would definitely stay here again. Compared to other luxury five star properties in central London, you can get rooms here for a lot less on certain occasions and probably better service and facilities. If you're looking to stay somewhere with fabulous history and decor in the capital and you want to be pampered, with a pool and excellent spa facilities, then I would definitely recommend this hotel.
