I stayed here for the weekend for a Mother's day treat. The refurbishment and furnishings are impressive with relaxing colours and innovative flower arrangements everywhere.
Security is strict yes, but as explained to maintain the exclusivity and to keep track of where everyone is for health and safety reasons as it's easy to get lost and some parts are still
under construction. They will also be launching their own range of building tours in the future. The spa is beautiful and private, with a small pool that is busy in the late afternoons.
Yes staff are still in training, with small issues like serviettes being needed for self service in the club and side plates for toast at breakfast. Otherwise staff are exceptionally attentive and polite and made the stay a real treat for my mother.
Watch out for the website when booking as prices are without VAT. It's expensive and in line with Savoy prices but I would go back tomorrow just for the buzz of the place and architectural joys. My room was on the Third floor too. I'm not particular about a view and this was the quietest hotel room that I've ever stayed in. At 5 foot two the bath is a bit of a challenge getting in and out of and more water pressure is required from the shower but no complaints otherwise.

Stayed in a Chambers room in the refurbished "Midland Grand" part of the St Pancras Renaissance for 4 nights in April during the hotel's soft opening. The room was stunning, 20-25 ft ceilings, floor to ceiling arched windows, lots of light, wonderful bedding. These rooms were not originally en-suite when built in 1873, so they basically created a "room within a room" for the bathroom - but it worked well and the shower was wonderful. I would agree that some of the staff seemed rather new to the service industry (servers in the lounge, security detail), but the front desk staff and the head Chambers lounge staff were delightful. In addition to our room, the public spaces in the old part of the hotel were breathtaking - lobby, Booking Office, grand staircase, hallways, views into the lobby/rail station, Ladies Smoking Room and side room (these last two are private function rooms) were clearly renovated to their former glory with meticulous care. I did feel a little out of place in jeans in such a grand place - thank goodness it was just soft opening. Kings Cross location not withstanding, I envision this hotel becoming THE place to stay in London and host once-in-a-lifetime, memorable events. The hotel is not too long of a walk from Regents park or Camden area, and you can always pop next door to the British Library if you want to view the original Magna Carta [one of 4 or 6, IIRC] or Canterbury Tails. One thing to note: the pool is more like a big spa - beautiful but small. I hope to return soon!

This is a stunning building and the refurbishment does the place proud. Unfortunately the service does not. There is considerable work to do by the management on bringing this up to the standard that is reasonable to expect of a premier establishment.

Some of the problems relate to some staff's poor command of English and others relate to simple lack of process discipline. Room service that takes twice as long as promised and exec lounge staff that do not know whether food can be obtained in the lounge.

If they get this sorted out then this promises to be a truly great place to stay but at the moment they are at risk of being very adversely compared to the excellent competition.

I would recommend it but with some qualification.

Hi

I visited the hotel for business purposes and i was staying in one of the opened 50 rooms, on the 3rd floor. The room itself was great, however several of my colleagues looked out of the window to find a wall only a few inches away.

The restaurant is good. I tried the haggis balls with creme cheese, but the beers on tap are overpriced and strange. Nobody is going to endulge in several pints of chocolate beer.

The staff was very attentive. Compliments to the front office staff and bell boys. Small details to be improved on, such as the room service clerk forgetting his pen (couldnt sign my bill), asked for a large portion of fires and I receives the smallest portion I have ever seen.

Overall I would come back, as the location is great, service is good and bulding AMAZING. I wouldnt pay 300 pounds out of my own pocket to stay there though.

Room Tip: Make sure your room doesnt have a view of a wall.

I have watched the renovations of the old Midland Railway Hotel over the last few years and was keen to see how Marriott/Renaissance has developed this hotel. I had a few days business in London so I thought I would try the “soft launch” of this hotel.
The security to get into the hotel seems a little over the top, but once passed that hurdle I would certainly give all the staff 5-stars+ for attention, friendliness and making you feel welcome.
The reception is cavernous and with only a small number of rooms open there is always someone there to look after you. My room was in the new Barlow wing towards the rear of the hotel. There are two lifts for over 210 rooms. Again only a few of the rooms were open so there was no waiting for the lift. However I do wonder when the hotel is fully operational and busy whether either reception or the lifts will cope.
The renovations have made some really good developments of some of the ground floor space. However a lot of the hotel has been refurbished as a modern 21st century hotel and it seems a big pity that Renaissance hasn’t capitalised on the history of the building. If you compare this with the Hilton at Paddington which is a similar renovation of a station hotel, the building renovation at Paddington is far superior taking the building as a whole.
However the bedroom was very comfortable with a modern HD television and a well appointed bathroom. There were some obvious teething problems. The drawers in the wardrobe wouldn’t open because the door hinges go in the way. Replenishment of the tea and coffee was hit and miss and no biscuits! The strangest thing about the room was that the furniture was not well arranged. Each day I moved the chair so that I could comfortably sit at the table and each day housekeeping returned it to its original position. However the beds and the chaise longue were superbly comfortable.
One worry is that every now and again I could hear a rumbling noise – not sure if it is the trains or underground or something associated with the building works – but could be annoying.
Food was excellent despite a limited menu. The main restaurant has yet to be opened and room service menus appeared to be in short supply. But the quality of the food was excellent. The service and food in the Executive Lounge was also excellent.
The swimming pool is slightly strange – there is limited space to swim and is mostly a large Jacuzzi.
It will be interesting to see how this hotel develops as it moves to its full opening. If it can maintain the high standards that are shown by the staff during this soft-opening, then it will be a truly excellent place to stay. I shall certainly be back!

Stayed on Friday 25th March, about 10 days after the doors were opened to paying guests. Yes there's still work to be done, but once all the work is complete this will be one of London's premier hotels.
Restaurant wasn't complete so all food and drink served in the old station ticket office which has been converted into a fantastic bar. Breakfast prices are expensive so get a rate which includes breakfast if possible.
Staff were obviously learning how their new place of work functioned, but were extremely professional and attentive.
No free WiFi when we were there despite being advertised on the booing confirmation.
Can only book direct with hotel during soft opening period.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor

This hotel is in the breathtaking neo-gothic station and the fit has really made the most of the impressive building. the reception is well done - but restaurant is really badly thought out.

Chairs impossibly low, half height tables which are too long and sofas which you cant sit on comfortably. I was looking for standard restaurant style seating but found a kind of bizarre knee height huge lounge. Food good, staff friendly and once the teething troubles are over.......
