Description: In 1952, a tenant by the name of Alistair leased the Guinea from Young's and transformed the business with a very simple idea. He realized that following the end of the Second World War, Americans were beginning to holiday in Europe in big numbers. Tourists would often, travel through France and Italy before arriving on British soil by which time they were 'gagging' for a decent steak. A decent steak was exactly what Alistair provided. Prime Scotch beef from Aberdeenshire. Basically, there was no menu and no price list. You were simply given a knife and asked to place a mark on the steak to indicate what size you wanted. Suddenly the Guinea Grill was a hot ticket, film stars, politicians, world leaders and the wealthy flocked to the back room of our tiny pub. We're founder members of the Scotch beef club and we've been serving the very best steaks for 60 years. We've trialled beef from other parts of the globe such as the US and Argentina. They all have their merits but for depth of flavour none of them compare to prime Scotch and the finest of English beef. This is the basis of our continued popularity together with the fact that our restaurant is within a unique London pub. Many of our staff have been with us for years, and we place a high value on customer recognition and warm hospitality.

What a find !

Central Mayfair.

Small friendly little pub front , once inside a lovely personal steakhouse in the back. Good choice of meats :) My steak was cooked to perfection ! Felt they were oddly tight with the chips, as we ordered 2 portions (£8) it comes as 1 small bowl ? How can such a cheap item be limited like that when your paying £33 for the meat ? After a complaint another bowl was delivered to the table.

Service was fast and friendly, nice atmophere, I almost forgot I was in central London !

Get ready to pay though, 2 x steak and chips , 4 x glasses of red wine , £135 ! Suppose it's Mayfair !

Will visit again :)

“Best steaks in London”
Reviewed August 9, 2013 via mobile

This pub cum restaurant, owned by Youngs Brewery I believe, has consistently provided superb steaks and excellent,if a bit quirky, service. The meat is top grade and always cooked to perfection. Can't vouch for rest of menu as once I've the raw meat display, nothing gets a look in.

“Fab steaks -”

Really great steaks, food is great, although the extras are costly. Does feel a bit cramped but that's all part of the place. Not for the faint hearted price wise.

“Great steaks”

This is a very good pub and restaurant. The steaks in particular are superb and a very nice selction of starters and some seriously good deserts. There is a very good wine list and the service is excellent. Highly recommended.

“My favourite steak restaurant in town”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

Love this place, great little pub in front and good restaurant in back, silver cutlerz, sommelier, the whole deal. Won't find a better steak in town and the other dishes such as fish and the starters are also amazing. 17.5% service charge vs. the standard 12.5% so the extra mile in decor and service you pay for but its worth it.
