Owner description: The Courtauld Gallery is one of the finest small museums in the world. Its collection stretches from the early Renaissance into the 20th century and is particularly renowned for the unrivalled collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. The Gallery also holds an outstanding collection of drawings and prints and fine example of sculpture and decorative arts.

In August the fountains in the courtyard made a lovely place for my niece to play while her Mum watched. I was able to take the 2 teens round the art gallery which was free for them and very reasonable for me. The art is arranged chronologically and is small enough to see all of it on one visit. It is near to the river and also Covent Gardens so makes a nice cultural visit in between shopping and sight seeing.

Always love a visit to this gallery. There is one section of Impressionist paintings and only a handful of people enjoying them at any one time. Where else does this happen! Good cafe in the basement. Excellent exhibitions throughout the year.

Not too big and the gallery has lots of impressionist art as well as lots of other good stuff. Worth the detour

The Courtauld is very easy to find, on the Aldwych, along the Strand. Somerset House itself is a popular destination, with its cafes and restaurants and wonderful exhibitions and shows, winter ice rink and summer outdoor films but it is the Courtauld Gallery at the entrance that has the indefinable magic. Everyone who goes raves about their latest find with its great café, its mouthwatering cakes and excellent lunch fare. The permanent exhibition is world class and the temporary exhibitions are amongst the best and most appealing. Art Fund members get in free and get a 10% reduction in the shop.

This is one of the nicest museums in London. Unlike most of the others it is not free (£6 entry apart from Mondays when it is £3) but worth every penny. Situated off the Strand entrance to Somerset House (also worth a visit) it does not have the number of paintings of the larger galleries but what it does have are stunning. The collection comprises of painting from the renaissance, impressionist and post impressionists. The star attractions for us were the Monets, Manet ("Bar at the Folies Bergere") Van Gogh ("Self portrait with a bandaged ear") and Cezanne ("The card players") amongst others. There is a small cafe/restaurant plus other exhibitions to explore within Somerset House. A first class way to spend a few hours - not to be missed.
