Rafayel on the Left Bank - Hotel & Spa

We spent our honeymoon at "Rafayel on the Left Bank" and stayed there for 8 nights. Our incredible journey starts with a "Pick-up service" from the airport to the hotel.
After we get up to the room, we found a little surprise for our wedding.
We had a fantastic view from our room up to the Thamse.

Every employee of the Hotel was very politely and smart. We felt more as a friend then a guest (in a very, very good way).
Also the chief of the Hotel treated us as we were the Most Importent visitors in his accommodation.

We had our best Scottish Angus Steak ever in the Restaurant "Banyam on the Thames" which is inclouded into the hotel.

Finally we can say we had an unforgattable honeymoon in this hotel and we will be back in september.

We stayed in late May whilst visting Chelsea flower show. It was about 30 minutes brisk walk from the show which was OK.

On arrival we were upgraded free to a suite and the room was huge - probably the best hotel room i've ever been in. The quality is very good and the bed superbly comfortable. The staff were vere helpful and extremely friendly and polite, almost as if they were trying too hard.

On the first night we ordered an in room dining meal. The food was wonderful and very reasonably priced for a quality hotel. The location was good for us and on the second day we walked from the train station back to the hotel, it took about 20 minutes but you need to know your way.

For a 5 star hotel in London this hotel offered very reasonable value for money, I will definitely visit again, I occasionally do business in the vicinity and will not hesitate to return.

I have been working in London for 18 months and have to stay in hotels every week. The rafayel is by far the best I have stayed in and easily merits its 5* rating. The rooms have everything you need and are very smart. The staff were excellent and would do all they could to help. The hotel owner made us feel like his personnel guests. The restaurant overlooks the Thames and you can watch the sunset over the skyline opposite as you eat. The food is truly first class. I could go on...... I will be staying there as much as I can from now on.

Really pleasant stay, but staff seemed a bit clueless at times eg concierge could'nt tell us how to find upstairs bars (which were a bit tricky) and even though they had jazz on in the open air bar it was'nt adverised anywhere, so we only found it at the end as it was finishing. Rooms very nice and good value booked direct with hotel. However all in all very pleasant and helpful staff so quibles really.
The mains in the Banyan restaurant along with the views of the river Thames were great and with 50% off for residents excellent value for London dining. £15 a day parking good for London too.

I have to disagree with the last review on this hotel. To be fair i didnt stay in the standard room but in one the amazon suites. Where can you stay in London in a room so big and spacious and comfortable for that price. The bathroom was huge with a shower and separate bath (with tv). The decor was modern and cool and the bed was very comfortable. Staff were extremely helpful, even showing me all the other rooms before i made my decision as i booked the yangtse room first. I will be going back every year for my anniversary and i have stayed at many 5 star hotels around the world.

After moving out of london over a year ago my parner and I decided to come back for an evening to remind ourselves what londons all about. When we came to the rafayel we were reminded of the luxury and brilliance that london can give. The owner of the hotel was very kind and welcomed each guest personally and gave his own little tour of the hotel which was very personable. It gave the impression that he cared as much about tthe hotel as his guests and wanted everyone to have a truely memorable experience. We would deffinately stay again and prehaps bring friends as the hotel was one that did not meet expectations but exceeded them!

Let's start with the positives. The room was spacious (we booked a standard room), the bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom (sorry, shower room - there was no bath) was modern and spacious (though devoid of the usual array of toiletries that one would normaly expect to find in a hotel of this standard).

Now the negatives. The lighting and shower controls are somewhat difficult to phathom out - there are very basic instructions in the room which are not completely accurate.

The location is far from ideal in terms of links to the West End and across the river. It takes you at least 45 minutes to reach the West End and, depending on traffic, over half an hour to cross the river. (I noted a previous comment from the management that the King's Road is a 15 minute walk away - this is simply untrue).

The Spa is medium to low grade. The staff are friendly and the prices are attractive. but the facilities are very limited. You can only use the hydrotherapy pool under supervision.

This is a very comfortable 3/4 star hotel in a lousy location, although rates are very competitive. However, I would rather pay a little more to be closer to the action.

Rafayel, Manager at Rafayel on the Left Bank - Hotel & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded June 2, 2011

Dear Mr. Cratchley

Thank you for your review. As you have quite rightly mentioned our rooms are spacious, the Mississippi room you stayed in being nearly 300 sq. ft. and this category of rooms are the smallest in the hotel. Our records indicate that you stayed overnight on the 27th of May, 2011.

Your criticism of the lack of toiletries contradicts our belief of no plastic policy that is very clearly visible in our website. We save nearly 250,000 plastic bottles of varying sizes being wasted yearly. Cutting waste is the best policy and plastic is not bio degradable. Rafayel stands for an eco friendly approach and that’s exactly our point of these toiletries being replaced by 250ml eco friendly ‘Neom’ products which cost much more. Being on river Thames we clear 50 – 100 bottles of plastic from our little quay on Thames.

Your complaint about lighting is also about the eco design of the hotel. Every bulb in the hotel is LED which consumes 1/6th of electricity consumed in most other hotels. This again is what Rafayel stands for. We are not a gimmicky eco friendly place. It is a part of our design and we are the only hotel in the world with nearly 100% of LED, and Phillips & VDA has conducted case studies of the efficiencies our hotel has introduced in the world of hospitality. The hotel has been light designed by Phillips who also designed the lighting of The National Art Gallery. It may be not to the liking of people who prefer bright lighting. These issues that you’ve picked up are the core factors of our design. We conceived this project based on these features.

We agree with your comments regarding the shower. Apparently its complicated but please note that these showers are used in the First class lounge of British Airways in Terminal 5 as well. Unlike the normal controls it has three controlling knobs and there is a sketch in every bathroom as we agree that they are a bit complicated. They greatly improve the efficiency of the water usage without losing comfort. These additional knobs provide rain shower, shower jets on the body and hand held shower plus power and efficiency of use. This too is an expensive option for us to use but we opted for it for the comfort of guests and to cut waste. All these features has been carefully thought about. Even BA in Terminal 5 has instructions displayed as these are not normal residential controls. The easy way out would have been to have 60 watt bulbs and normal showers but then we would have compromised the eco friendly features of the hotel and on comfort of our guests.

With regard to the distance to west-end is concerned, west-end could be either Selfridges side or Harrods side and depending on traffic on Park Lane or Sloane Street the journey can take 20 to 30 minutes. Prince Albert bridge is under repairs and the journey should be quicker once this is completed. It is by coincidence that a guest of ours has mentioned in another forum yesterday, that they reached battersea bridge in 10 minutes of walking, and Kings road is 5 minutes over the bridge. Blue Elephant based on Kings Road is approximately a 20 minutes walk at an average speed of walking. our website is packed with information because of our location. We can rightly argue that bus 170, which stops right at our doorstep, takes you directly to Victoria in approximately 15 minutes. In addition we offer a FREE shuttle service every 30 minutes to both the nearest train and tube stations. You may consider the area lousy but our guests choose Battersea. As mentioned earlier our website clearly shows why Battersea. We take great pride in Battersea on the Thames.

We are grateful for your review but unfortunately your criticism of our product cuts at the core of our design approach. It’s quite another matter that the eco friendly credentials of our unique hotel may not be of significance to some customers but we take great pride in living at peace with nature.

Best Regards
The Management
