Civil Service Club
Ranked #159 of 565 London B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 11, 2013

Front desk staff couldn't have been more helpful after travel agent muddled booking, also explaining how the Club was organised for Civil Servants

Large and comfortable room (505), super fast free wifi (fast enough to watch iPlayer) and plenty of sachets of tea/coffee. However, the shower temp. control was highly erratic and the lift goes to floor 4 with some quite narrow stairs to 5. I slept very well, no road noise or folks slamming doors.

Good range of beers in the bar, reasonably priced for London; the bar is thankfully old skool with no musak or games machines. Didn't dine in as the restaurant is closed Mondays, however the full English breakfast was good with decent quality bacon and sausage.

Location is just minutes walk from Trafalgar Square, Charing X is nearest tube I reckon.

Paid £95 B&B which I thought good value for money all in all and would certainly go back.

The club is right in the centre of London easy access to everywhere. The rooms are very clean but club in general a little tired. Being a bit snobbish if comparing it to a 5 star hotel, but certainly much better than a travel lodge or similar... Good value bar with good prices and god value if basic food. Breakfast is excellent all cooked to order better than nothing 5 star hotel.

Stayed over the weekend 17/18 November, Rooms are fine though a little small but adequate.
Well placed for central London near to Embankment tube.
Flatscreen TV with Freeview, coffee and tea making facilties.
Evening meal is very reasonable at £16.00 for 3 courses.Well cooked and tasty.
Let down by chaotic breakfast, arrived in the dining room at 0900 sharp finally received breakfast at 09.40.
toast burnt and tea cold.
The waiter and waitress Manuel and Mavis had not a clue what they were doing.
A little training would go a long way it is not exactly a large dining room.
A pleasant place spoiled by bad service at breakfast.

The man behind the desk during check in was very rude, and he put us in a different room from the one we had requested. There was no elevator service to the room. It was very noisy because of traffic, and there was a loud equipment noise that lasted almost all night. The phone rang in the middle of the night for no reason. The meat in the restaurant in the evening was as tough as a tire tread.

I have been a club member for a few years now and find it good for a stay in London usually while on business.
Excellent location close to Whitehall, Embankment tube station and Charing Cross.
Rooms are a bit shabby however and in need of refurbishment. Singles are really small.
Free wifi and good range of toiletries and room extras provided. Being tucked in between much larger buildings don't expect a view!
Club management seem to have been encouraging special activity evenings of late which unfortunately makes the bar area unpleasantly busy and getting room bookings has been getting really difficult especially mid week.
Good for staying when on my own whilst on business, but I would seriously think twice about using it as a base for a holiday.

Room Tip: Double room for better size, book well in advance for a mid week stay.

I stay there several times a year with work and have stayed in both single and double rooms....preferring the latter for the extra room/comfort.
Facilities are comfortable and clean though if you expect major chain standards then this is not the place to go.
I am very comfortable there but I know others who expect to have more though the location is great.
Food is fancy free and freshly cooked.....no cooked in bulk hot plates here....good old fashioned cooked to table and served on proper silver service and crockery.....yes cups with saucers and silver pots!
Rooms have more toiletries than a Teavelodge with sewing kits and shoe shines plus biscuits and there are generous supplies of thick towels.
There is excellent price inclusive Wi-Fi.
The location cannot be beaten being so near Whitehall.
Newspapers can be ordered and delivered to your room early morning....what more can you say!

Room Tip: Doubles are far better.

I work for the civil service in Plymouth and have been a member of the club for the past 6 years. The location is excellent, 2 tube stations, good bus service etc. The staff are excellent and have always given First Class service, dining room staff, reception staff so helpful and kind with a good management time. The club has become a second home and again in the respect of the location in central London offers good value for money. The breakfast is superb with a good selection, lunch / evening meal also excellent. Always friendly welcome in the bar /lounge. Rooms are clean and tidy with television and other good facilities, all ensuite. You are close at hand for Trafalgar Square, River Thames, Westminster Abbey etc. The club often holds special activities such as comedy nights and disco. I would recommend this club to any of my colleagues when staying in London and I should like to say a special word of THANKS TO ALL STAFF FOR THEIR GREAT EFFORTS and looking after so well - Plymouth Paul - see you all soon !!!!!!
