Rose and Crown Stoke Newington
Ranked #34 of 572 London B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 4, 2011

The rooms are luxuriously appointed. The hotel is easy to get to using public transport (day or night) and well located with easy access everything that London has to offer.
Stone Newington offers an effortlessly charming village atmosphere that soothes the aches that come with visiting a big city. The Rose & Crown is close to Clissold Park which is the perfect place for a morning jog (if you're that way inclined).
The team are helpful and friendly and make it very hard to leave.
We stayed for a week and didn't get tired of the breakfast menu which was varied and delicious.
The beds are comfortable, the rooms are well heated, the water pressure is excellent.
We didn't experience any problems with noise; even though we were staying in a room directly over the pub.

We stayed in the Rose and Crown on two separate occasions during the summer. We were down from Scotland visiting family. By the end of the second stay the Rose and Crown had become our base and family and friends would meet up with us there to eat, drink, socialise and plan outings. The staff and Jolla, the manager, in particular, were very helpful and indulgent of us. We felt that we were treated as valued customers and not just as passing trade. The assistance given to my elderly father was particularly solicitous. The service could not be faulted, the rooms were comfortable and the food fine.

If you are staying at the Rose and Crown I expect you have a good reason , like a wedding at the nearby Town Hall. It would be hard to justify staying otherwise. Rooms are not cheap. We had an excellent room at the front of the hotel but the road is a bus route and there is traffic until late so road noise is a serious problem. Some rooms are very small, you need to check what you are getting. There is very limited hotel parking, otherwise you have to find a place on street. The Rose and Crown pub is excellent.

The Rose and Crown is a bustling pub close to the cool shops and restuarants of Stoke Newington Church Road. Above the pub are 6 recently refurbished rooms, some with claw foot baths and all very chic. There is a small sunny breakfast room where delights such as fruit compotes and eggs benedict are served to hotel guests. A roof terrace is also available. Although there is no dedicated car parking, the hotel provides parking permits to allow use of local roads. The only possible downside is there is no tube station nearby, but a bus stop is very close.

Our large family group stayed at the Rose and Crown for the weekend and we all had a fabulous time. Yola, the manager could not have been more helpful, welcoming and accommodating, she is a real asset to the place. Vi who helps out at breakfast is a gem and lovely to chat to; the staff in the pub were also very friendly.

The whole place has recently been redesigned and refurbished and it has been done beautifully; the feel of a boutique hotel with some lovely quirky and individual touches. My husband and I were lucky enough to have room 6 - the executive suite which is vast and completely stunning; incorporating a free standing bath, huge walk in shower, separate bathroom with double basins and a further dressing area. Although not as large, the other doubles were stylishly furnished and the bathrooms in all rooms had been fitted out to a very high standard. Everything was spotlessly clean. A real bonus was the roof terrace where we all gathered to read the papers on the sun loungers and for an alfresco bottle of wine in the evening. It was a gorgeous hot weekend, so this was the perfect spot to chill out and great to be away from the hustle and bustle outside. The only down side with the heat was the rooms were very hot; but they had provided fans and the alternative of a sheet to sleep under instead of the duvet. The beds themselves are very comfortable.

Breakfast was great, and Yola's homemade fruit puree, yoghurt and granola was incredible. The hollandaise sauce is also homemade.

For us, The Rose and Crown was the perfect location for the wedding we were attending in the town hall opposite and we really enjoyed browsing the little shops & cafes Stoke Newington has to offer and walking in the lovely park opposite. We had our five year old son with us and the park was brilliant for him. I would highly recommend The Rose and Crown for groups, but also as a romantic getaway - choose room 6 if this is you!

We stayed at the Rose and Crown for two nights during April. Our son and family live nearby. There appears to be no other guest house accommodation in Stoke Newington. We booked the double, room 4 priced £120 per night. The room was small but clean and beautifully fitted with quality furnishings. The bed was exceptionally comfortable with crisp, clean, cotton linen. There was adequate storage space. The bathroom was well planned, clean and pleasant. The roof deck was a thoughtful addition.
We felt there were a number of drawbacks in this room. The first was the intense 24 hour heat drifting up from the two boilers which the room is situated over. A fan was provided but this creates a noise during the night. If the windows are opened the traffic and pigeon noise are prohibitive. There was no full length mirror and no seating for two people apart from the bed. It was tricky to work at the table as the chair was an easy one and therefore too low. Some of the desk drawers were locked (why?)
Breakfast was well and efficiently cooked by an elderly lady but the 'cold' part was unimaginative. The high quality local bakers did not appear to be used.
In general, apart from the intense heat, the room and stay were comfortable but significantly over priced.

My husband and I took the number 73 bus from Kings Cross to Stoke Newington to visit our daughter. The bus stopped outside the Rose and Crown pub where we stayed for two nights. Will, the landlord welcomed us in and showed us up to our magnificent room complete with bathroom, dressing area and free standing bath. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. The pub itself was great, complete with open fires good beer and food. We can't wait to have another excuse to return.
