One of the first things you'll discover about Le Relais De Venise is you can't book so have to queue to get in. Not so bad if it's fine outside and the queue is short but probably not so great if it's wet and you're waiting a while.

On entering the place it seems quite chaotic with staff rushing about and tables crammed in. To get seated our table had to be pulled out and then pushed back towards us after we were seated, so best not to need the loo during the meal.

They only serve one dish here which is steak and skinny chips with a sauce and as people are prepared to queue outside for it I was expecting great things.
Well it was good but not great, I've had better steak elsewhere. There was nothing really wrong with it but for me it was average and wasn't worth queuing for.

Well worth queuing for...whatever the weather. This place is an institution whatever branch you are in. Order the house red which is great with the steak - lovely!

I ate at Le Relais on the recommendation of a friend who lives in London - and if you know what to expect you really can't be disappointed! For £23 you get a simple salad starter and some lovely French bread, followed by steak cooked how you like it, a delicious garlicky sauce, and thin salty chips.

What else could you ask for? Well how about a second helping of steak and pretty much as many more chips as you can eat!! Every restaurant should do seconds - great idea.

House wine is around £16 a bottle and is a decent glass of red. Atmosphere is bustling and typically quite cramped so probably not your thing if you want to have a private conversation or an overly romantic meal.

If however, you want meat chips and wine and would like to spend £30 or so - give this place a try!

Yes you queue but it's worth the wait. Great atmosphere, great service and great food. The staff are very attentive and look after you without putting pressure on you to leave even though you can see diners waiting for a table.

If you like wine, steak, chips, and cheese then there really is no other restaurant like this one (other than its branches elsewhere). Despite the horror stories we'd read about the long queues we went here on the recommendation of the lad who works in our local chip shop (!). There are NO queues at 6pm on a Thursday night and we were seated immediately. There is no menu, just a brief wine list. The food you are given is a simple walnut salad, steak frittes (cooked to however you like it) and then a choice of desert.

The steak frittes and the "top secret" sauce is perfection on a plate. Its served in two instalments with fresh frittes accompanying the second half of your steak (which is kept warm for you, away from your table). Its a delightfully quirky way of serving this classic dish but makes perfect sense.

I chose cheese for my desert and at £8.75 (with port) you get a lot of very good cheese - its superb value.

Other reviewers on this site have been fairly nasty about the waiting staff. All I can say is that, on our visit, they were polite and friendly. This will quickly become one of our favourite haunts whenever we fancy steak. Its far, far better the Gaucho, Goodman and all the other steak hoses that have popped up everywhere in the past few years - and very good value for money.
