“Steak is nice, but the sauce is simply fantastic”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2012

This is a special place. The sometimes long queue gives the impression of an event. The atmosphere of a busy French brasserie and the Venice inspired frescos create a joyous and vibrant continental environment. The set menu with green salad and steak with French fries is a classic and a great value for money. For the joy of the unrepentant carnivores steak and fries can be served twice. Steak is nice, but the sauce is simply fantastic and it really makes the difference and is one of the distinctive marks of the place. Service might be brisk, particularly because sometimes they give the (correct) impression of being under a time constraint. However that is part of the deal and does not bother, as the place is able to serve efficiently and accommodate an always growing queue. You might enjoy it both for informal business meals or with family and friends. Not recommended for vegetarians!

“Worth the wait if you want a conveyor belt factory experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2011

I live locally and have witnessed the queues outside the restaurant on numerous occasions and thought that the steak there must be good. So I finally went to see what it was all about.
I don't normally write reviews but felt someone should point out the reality!

My brother and I arrived at 5:45 and were the third group in the queue and at 6:00 were promptly ushered in - within 10 minutes the restaurant was full to capacity and by 6:30 another long queue had formed outside. So I thought this was going to be something pretty special - can all these people really be wrong?

The tables are close together - the waitresses on a number of occasions, without saying a word first, in order to create more space between the tables pushed my table closer to my chest such that I couldn't move.

It is a set menu - everyone starts with a salad comprising of just lettuce, walnuts and a mustard dressing. This is followed by two servings of steak and french fries. There is a choice of desserts. The waitressed asked how we wanted our steak - blue, rare or medium but then the steaks came out not cooked to order. Everyone gets it the same way - like the old Ford cards, any colour you like as long as it is black!

The steak is cooked, thinly sliced (probably with a machine) and placed on a platter by the chefs in the kitchen. The waitresses dish out the steak and fries from the platter - the cut of meat is unknown but was tender enough.

For two people including two beers and dessert the bill came to £64 - not worth it. As a local I worry that tourists coming to the restaurant will get a bad impression of London restaurants - there are much better French restaurants for quality, authenticity and price. On the whole the experience was like going to a fast food restaurant. Save your money and the queuing and go somewhere better.

This place is fantastic - the steak is excellent as are the super skinny fries. Really good red wine too.
Its a simple concept done so well. I've been twice and will definitely go again.
