El Pirata de Tapas was my local favourite when we lived in the area and I'm always keen to find excuses to go back. Consistently great tapas with really inventive ingredients. Our favourites include the wood pigeon with a yummy fig puree and the braised pig's cheeks. Broken Eggs also to die for.

For a reasonably priced but good quality meal I've never been disappointed and most recently went for a birthday dinner with a group of 6. Despite one being pregnant and one having some allergies they were swiftly catered for with alternatives and everyone had a great meal. Their sangria is lethal but they have some great reds on their list...

The only downer is that service generally good but not great - think it does depend who you get.

We live in Notting Hill and as such have been following the reviews of this restaurant on Westbourne Grove for a while, and decided to try with our friends for an informal quick dinner this weekend- 2 couples and 1 child.

We booked days in advance (this being London) and arrived promptly at 7pm to a deserted place. We were sat downstairs and we immediately asked to move upstairs as it was dark, gloomy and extremely cold... The waiter pretended not to understand (although his English was fluent) & simply adjusted the direction of the air conditioning; we, in true English style, decided not to make a fuss, and sat in the dark and now not so cold.

We ordered 2 tasting menus (£21 each, minimum of 2), and 2 chef menus (£25 each, minimum 2), plus an extra desert (for the 5th person), 3 bottles of sparking water (no idea why their water bottles for a table are only slightly larger than a small Perrier bottle), one bottle of Spanish red (£27.50, ok and drinkable), and service automatically included ... Total around £150.

Food was good / ok.. . The presentation often better than the actual taste. We liked the octopus carpaccio, paprika sprinkled squid, squid black ink risotto, and the deserts (rich orange chocolate mouse in particular)... Slow roasted pork - overrated and chewy, beef- rather sour & over powering.

Service was basic and minimal- the waiter felt that he should look agreeable because that is expected but otherwise very little interaction from him except setting dishes down with minimal announcement (which we could not hear), and clearly just serving for the sake of serving. The manager who took the cc payment downstairs was equally surly.

When we left at 8.30pm, the place was heaving. Whilst £150 for 4 adults is not expensive, especially in London and Notting Hill, it is for an informal dinner in the dark and minimal service.

Conclusion: over-rated, minimal service, ok food.

Suggestion: this is London... There are better local Spanish tapas restaurants around!

I have spent a lot of time travelling through Spain and El Pirata De Tapas gives a real feel of excellent modern spanish cooking.

We shared the tasting menus between us and we were pleased with the food. My friends explored the excellent cocktails while I explored the impressive wine list.

A very nice experience and good value too.

Having heard rave reviews about this place I was disappointed when it finally came to visiting.
We ordered the set menu between three people. The service was quite good although it was busy and therefore not very personal. The meal was bulked out with lots of potato dishes and everything was swimming in oil. We were served a good pork dish but other than that it seemed a little like rich peasant food. I doubt I would go back - but maybe I just had a bad experience, as everyone else I know who has visited, has had an enjoyable evening with good food. Jury is out!

Went there to have a quick snack but ended up having a whole meal. Great food and great flavours, this is indeed proper Spanish food. We were pleasantly surprise and we will definitely be back . Totally worth it!
