“Tired interior to room, anything but 'Boutique'”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

Stayed in October 2012

*Twin room (Club?) that had been made into a double (headboards to wall) made us feel as though we were in a Travel Lodge not a Boutique Hotel in London

*Peeling veneer to desk sides and also the top where the light had been dragged around

*Soiled Bed throw

*Sheet had come away when I woke up and on tucking it back in discovered mattress top to be full of previous guest hair/pubes!

*Tatty scatter cushions on bed with stains (Do the cleaners not see these?)

*Rough finish to interior paint in room

*Basic selection of toiletries that were 'green', and so much so that the shampoo container only lasted for one shower before it started to disintegrate into the shampoo when the carton was squeezed

*Noisy - Could here all that went on in the next room and endless slamming doors in the corridor

*Windows do not open to allow fresh air to room or corridors, so felt airless

*Iron old and worn so did not want to risk on clothing

*Major lack of quality control and eye for detail

The hotel could benefit from some tips from the 'Soho Group' as we actually paid less staying in two of their hotels over the weekend and they were of extremely high quality

Dear Morpheous15, thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the hotel. I am very sorry that you found our housekeeping to be poor and I appreciate photos. I have used these to remind my housekeeping and maintenance teams that such detail is important to our customers. There are often occasions when we do need more double beds than we have and we will zip together our twins to create additional beds. We pride ourselves as a boutique hotel and I am sorry that felt that we did not live up to your expectations.

Great hotel with very good facilities (wifi, tv, bathroom top class). Quiet location but still close to central London. 10min walk to London Bridge underground. Nice view from higher floors.

This hotel was a base for Hotel GB tv series.

Room Tip: Nice view from higher rooms.

we pre-booked a weekend in this hotel months ago so we were fascinated to see it was the base for the Hotel GB series before we went. Unfortunately I think the TV crews must have done some damage, the place looked a bit tatty honestly, there is no bar upstairs, just a very poorly stocked bar in the restaurant. They make a big deal of the Apple TV interactive information in the rooms but there was nothing in the hotel information about breakfast or the bar opening hours. The restaurant/bar was dead by 10pm, just a few staff sat around having a drink after their shifts. Breakfast was good but we were glad it was included in our room price as the costs looked a bit high. it was nice enough but we wouldn't go back, we got better value for money at the travelodge in Southwark and they have parking..

Room Tip: Go for a club room, the showers are really good and the best mattress ever !

Very helpful staff, clean comfortable rooms, decent sized towels and hairdryer - always a good thing! Easily accessible to central London and great location so near to the trendy Bermondsey St. Would stay there again.

This hotel is fantastic and will we will go back time after time we have recommended the Bermondsey to all our family and friendsup here in west yorkshire.
The trip was for my partners 50th birthday, and the hotel also accommadated our two springer spaniels. The staff there made more of a fuss over our two dogs than us!!!
Brilliant location and easy walking distance into London.
To see it on TV in the series hotel GB is great because it deserves it.
Keep up the good work all at the Bermondsey and will see you soon and thankyou !!

Putting an Apple TV in a Travel lodge room does not make a "boutique" hotel!

The Bermondsey Square Hotel bills itself as a "boutique" hotel. Far from it. The rooms are square boxes with little to commend them. They boast an Apple TV, but the rest of the room facilities would look equally at home in a travelodge. The quirky arrangement of the bed (at a skewed angle) and awkward positioning of the desk make navigating the room a challenge, and impossible in the dark. There is no wardrobe/closet, instead your clothes hang on a "trendy" wall installation, so you walk into them every time you move around the room.
The en-suite shower room boasts a drench shower - this adds to the "designer" tag but does nothing to actially facilitate the process of showering as a means to getting clean.
Outside of the rooms, the hotel has little to offer. Reception is small, making service slow if more than one person wants to check in or out. There is no lounge area, so nowhere to sit other than your room or the restaurant.
As for the restaurant, this is a celebrity chef restaurant, or is it - actually a celebrity grocer's restaurant - "Greggs Table". It is possibly the one redeeming feature of the hotel, with acceptable food at tolerable prices.

If you need an overnight stop south of the river near Tower Bridge, and have no expectations from the "boutique" tag, then this hotel may suit you. However, if you expect luxury, high design, high tech and good service you will be disappointed.

As I write this, the hotel is preparing to feature in the Channel 4 "Hotel GB" program and is being ripped apart and re-furbished in readiness for its starring role. I can only hope the the legacy of the changes for Hotel GB will be a significant improvement.
