My husband and I got a special offer through Travelzoo and went to the Royal Horseguards Hotel last night. It is the first time I've been inside this wonderful building though I've passed by loads of times. The whole experience was really lovely.
We were a little early so went into the bar for a house gin. We shared a bottle of fever tree tonic and I was able to ask for cucumber instead of lemon. However, it was almost ruined by far too much ice. I asked for something to take out the ice and the girl brought a small glass bucket with tongs which was no problem. I do with they would ask 'how much ice would you like' instead of drowning it by putting a whole glass full on top of the gin. Surprised there were no complementary 'nibble' which one would expect at an hotel of this type. Gin was £8 each without tonic so a few nuts/olives would not go amiss.
Dinner itself was really wonderful and the staff were superb. We could have really filled up on the different fresh breads offered to us throughout.
I was more than full-up at the end of the meal without feeling uncomfortable. We decided against the £30 per head wine companions and opted for a bottle of Australian Chenin Blanc at £36 which is way over what we'd normally pay for when eating out.
It took a little while for the wine to arrive then it was a little warm for me so they put into an ice-bucket and we didn't actually have any poured until we were into our 3rd course.
Overall a really good experience. Would like to go back in the summer because the terrace is really lovely.
