I’ve been coming to this place for over 20 years now – I must have been 50 or more times – has a special place in my heart (and stomach!) It’s basic – down-market to be fair – but sometimes that’s all you need – and the food is decent for the money.

If you’re hungry and haven’t booked anywhere this place won’t disappoint – just walk in and order a balti. They used to come in huge iron dishes, but they’re smaller portions now. The food is the standard sort you’d expect of an inexpensive Indian – all perfectly tasty – and you can get HUGE duvet sized naan breads (which I’ve not seen anywhere other than Birmingham).

As with many Asian restaurants, the toilets are tiny and very basic and next to the kitchen (which some will consider a bit grim). With three floors they’re certainly not short of space (I’ve never booked).

This place is definitely NOT one for a special occasion but it’s a great meeting point and perfect for people on a budget.
(The Punjab on Neil Street is a cut above Sartaj but it is more expensive and can be busy.)

We were on a Saturday night out and wanted somewhere to eat and spotted this place.

It was OK, the food was good, the menu ok but the atmosphere and service were pretty poor.

Around 8:30 on a Saturday it was about half full. The decor and atmosphere were fairly standard, nothing bad but not impressive either.

The menu was fairly standard but there were some quite interesting fish dishes.

When it came the food was tasty but was let down by being lukewarm.

Service was pretty poor. We were told we'd have to wait for a table despite it being half empty (nobody cane for the empty takes shoe we were there).

The staff were unfriendly and could only speak in monosyllabic perfunctory sentences. As I mentioned the food came lukewarm served in cold baltis (obviously not cooked in them). One served we had to summon a waiter back to bring plates (this was clearly a problem as the table next to us had to ask three times for plates). Finally we had to ask twice for the tap water we'd ordered.

All in all of was OK - food tasty, good value but the service was poor. Fine for a quick bite to eat but not "an experience"

I Have been here several times now and it have always left satisfied. If you like Balti then this is a great choice with their 'build your own' Balti option. The large table Naans are also quite something!
Decor is fine and staff are attentive. Toilets are right next to the kitchen which is only minus but unless they start cooking in the toilets I cant see a real issue with this.

We were looking for a restaurant near the cambridge theatre, and chose this restaurant of the Internet as we all liked curry ( a safe bet as was 11 of us. When we saw it from the outside we were a bit disappointed and thought we may go else were. So glad we didn't. We had popadoms to start of with, this is the only complaint they Were a little bit stale. The pain course was lovely couldn't complain. Seemed very busy. Didn't have plain ice cream for children I.e vanilla ice-cream on its own. Service was very good

Restaurant well worth going too.

Sartaj is an Indian restaurant near Covent Garden in London. The food was good and reasonably priced, the staff were friendly and efficient, and the decor was warm and cosy. The restaurant was doing a brisk trade despite it being early evening. I highly recommend this restaurant to lovers of Indian food.
