Although a good location, the staff are unhelpful, the wifi does not work, there is one block of showers located in the lower lower ground through many different corridors - weird, there are mainly middle-elderly aged people, the beds are short and not very wide....cold milk for breaky which was nice but only white bread, jam & cornflakes

This is a bare minimum hostel, great for a short stay. It's around the corner from Russell Square tube station on the Picadilly Line, one stop away from Kings Cross. WiFi wasn't working while we were there but staff at reception were very helpful about things to do in the local area.

Each bed has little curtains which made it easier to sleep. There were only 2 powerpoints in our 8-bed dorm but there was a sink and plenty of space for everyone's bags on the floor.

The toilet cubicles were very small, but at least they were clean. The showers are all the way downstairs in the basement; there was hot water, but it sprayed everywhere...

Breakfast is very simple fare: toast, butter, jam, cornflakes, milk and tea.

It is rather big hostel and there were a lot of people. It wasn't very clean (bedrooms, toilets). Personal area in dorms is very limited. Breakfast ("continental") was tasteless. The staff was not very helpful. On the other hand - the hostel is very well located (close to subway, British Museum and St Pancras station) so it may be consider for 1-2 nights option.

This is a large hostel, with all the usual hostel annoyances: crowded rooms, less than luxurious showering facilities, breakfasts that feel like cattle crowding around a trough at feeding time. But I choose it repeatedly, since its location is great, the prices are quite low, and the little curtains on the beds make sleeping much easier than it might be. I've always slept well here, and have no complaints.

Additionally, at a recent visit I left my laptop computer in my room when I checked out. (I had never done something so dumb before, and was incredibly worried about all the data I might have lost.) When I returned about 90 minutes after checking out, the manager had it at his desk, waiting for me to claim it. The cleaner who found it easily could have found a way to sell in - London surely offers plenty of scope to fence stolen electronics - but he didn't and I recovered my computer.

So when I need a cheap bed in central London I stay here.

I recently stayed at smart for 2 weeks whilst starting my new job. The location is great, directly behind russel square tube station, only 1 stop from KXSP. With local shops round about too. I only used the hostel for a place to shower and sleep, and it did well. I'm not usually one for talking to others, so I move into a room, find a bed and either shower or sleep. When you first enter it is quite unnerving, especially of you hadn't stayed in these places before. Also I was reading previous reviews and started getting a bit unsure. The showers are not boiling hot. I didn't find anything wrong with them and I don't like boiling showers. The heyday you get a free breakfast - cornflakes tea and toast, better than nothing. Considering I got a deal out of the Internet, I'm quite happy to use it again

Let me break this down in categories as I would continue to ramble on how terrible this place was.

Service: The people were very rude at the counter, and made sure they mentioned 4-5 times that if you are a minute late on checkout, they will charge you for another night.
Value: Quite expensive for a room that you can't do anything but sleep in. No food, no drinks.
Sleep Quality: Good. They have curtains to isolate yourself if need be.
Cleanliness: OK, however, don't expect the cleaner to knock. Oh no, they literally knock as they swipe the card and walk in on you.
Location: The only good thing about this hostel
Rooms: Tiny and smell

The showers are in the friggen basement and is a PRISON set up. You are all next to each other and separated by curtains that have holes in them. Oh, and toilets, they are both male AND female. So girls, if you're doing your business, expect a male in the cubicle right NEXT TO YOU. A terrible place, will make sure i go out of my way to tell people to AVOID this maximum security prison.

The hostel is basic, but the location is great. I have tried a few other places in London, and this is the best I have found. It is cheap and is close to the underground. The staff is generally not nice. If you want some peace the 4-bed dorms are a good choice. But they are at the top floor so if your baggage is heavy it will get heavy. It is a short walk to british museum. You need flip flops for the shower. If you shower late morning there probably won't be any hot water. If you are there too early it might be scolding hot.

Room Tip: The four-bed dorms might be a good idea if you want to be away from the bigger dorms (where there of...
