“Fabulous vacation at Captain Bligh's”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Visited the Bligh House in August with my sister-in-law who had stayed there on a few other trips. It was absolutely charming. Our hosts Gayna and Simon greeted us at the door and were so welcoming . We even had all our luggage carried upstairs for us which was a nice treat. Both Gayna and Simon filled us in on all the wonderful places to visit if we were interested. They explained about the different transportation we could use. The underground transportation was only a few blocks away on foot and we used it everyday to get around. It was terrific . Our room was absolutely perfect. Authentically decorated. We had a very spacious living room and kitchen combined. The table was even set on our arrival. Our bedroom and bath were also spacious and beautifully decorated. Our hosts were always available to us but gave us our own space but were there whenever we need help. They even called us a cab one day when we were running late for a tour. London was a wonderful vacation but our hostd made a lasting impression and I will certainly be back to spend more time at the Bligh House. I plan on returning again, with my husband next time.

Room Tip: We checked out several rooms and they were all delightful .

WE spent a week in the "film studio" which we found very limited in space and on the top floor with 4 flights of stairs. We found it difficult some times after walking round London. The breakfast starter pack was ok but the kitchen area to arrange your brekkie was limited. Our suitcase we had to leave outside the room as there was no space. I think Gayna realized that they must turn it into a single room only and advised she may do this, after we left!!

Room Tip: If you want space as a couple choose an apartment

Thank you for your review.
Don’t worry folks – we will not be taking away our popular, cheaper double room, we know the Film Studio is always the first one to go on that basis, and anyway we’ve already got a single room!
However, we do agree with these guests that a whole week with big luggage in one room should not be recommended and we will take only four night bookings in future.
We will also make sure that those booking the Film Studio have read the website properly and are aware of the number of stairs and size of room.

We spent 4 nights in the Crow's Nest at Captain Bligh's House, returning home on August 19th. We were warmly greeted by our hosts Gayna & Simon on arrival, given local information re restaurants and getting around etc. and even had our bags carried up to our rooms. The Crow's Nest is delightful, with kitchenette/comfortable lounge area which is more spacious than photos can convey, as well as shower room and bedroom. It has been lovingly decorated and fitted out with great attention to detail and artistic flair. Nothing was too much trouble for Gayna and Simon who clearly wanted us to have a good stay. They were interesting people, kind, helpful, unobtrusive, yet available should we have a query. This area of London, which we have visited several times in recent years is great with easy access to the Thames, the underground, buses and main line station and we ate locally, (plenty of restaurant/pub choice), though we could have stayed 'at home' to eat. We will certainly return to Capt. Bligh's House in the future and look forward to meeting Gayna & Simon again and maybe sample one of the other lovely apartments.

I stayed at the Captain Bligh last week, in the Captain's Cabin, and it was my best hotel room to date. Gayna and Simon are so warm and welcoming and clearly happy and excited to have guests. The room could not have been better. So many wonderful touches and details. There's a TV, of course, and a well-appointed kitchenette (with breakfast-makings in the fridge, teakettle, hotplate, microwave) and a very modern en suite bathroom. It felt like being in the home of a good friend. And the price is excellent.

It was quiet and and what a treat to hear Big Ben chiming every hour! It's an easy 10 minute walk to Westminster Bridge (Parliament, Big Ben, the Embankment, the London Eye), which means an easy walk to Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, The Strand, The National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, St. James Park, Westminster Abbey, The Churchill War Rooms, The Savoy (great afternoon tea!). All within a half hour's walk if you like to walk, and I do.

The tube stop is Lambeth North on the Bakerloo line so getting to and from Heathrow is a piece of cake as well. Heathrow Express to Paddington, which is also served by the Bakerloo, so you get on at the tube station at Paddington and ride straight to Lambeth North, no changes. 20 minutes. You can be in from the airport or at the airport within an hour. As for tube rides in general, from Lambeth you can go to Waterloo (next stop) or the Embankment (second stop) and pick up these lines: Jubilee, Northern, District, or Circle. That's all you need! The stop is about two blocks away from the hotel.

Also nice to pop over to the Imperial War Museum across the street and have the park right there.

No problem with wifi. It was speedy and easy.

I just have one suggestion, otherwise, the visit was just perfect and exactly what I needed. It would be great if there were clear 'office hours', including in the evening, when one of the private doors was open so you could pop in and ask a question. I only ran into my lovely hosts once during my visit (didn't have a question at that time) and I just didn't feel comfortable ringing the ship's bell to get their attention. It seemed like it would be too loud, especially if one was coming in later in the evening or leaving earlier than some guests might like to be awakened by the bell.

I have already recommended Captain Bligh's Guesthouse to several people. It's such a gem! I will definitely stay there again so I can try every room.

We stayed in the "film studio" at Captain Bligh House for four nights of our honeymoon. We enjoyed the location - convenient to the city, but without the hordes of tourists. Our hosts were as helpful as could be - especially when it came to our travels. They helped us find the quickest easiest route from the airport and also gave us plenty of advice on how to get around London. We recommend getting an "Oyster Card" for use on buses and the tube. Cheaper fares, no restriction on travel time, no need for exact fare. At the end of your trip they will refund you for the card ($5) and any remaining funds on it.

All in all - we appreciated having a "home base" where we could relax, prepare small meals, and rest our feet between adventures. They pack a lot of convenience into such small spaces. We would certainly stay here again if we were in town.

This is my second visit to Captain Bligh House in the last couple of years and it won't be my last. As so many people have said before, Simon and Gayla are such a lovely and fun couple that you feel right at home immediately. We stayed at the London Apartment and it was absolutely perfect for the two of us. My favorite part of the room is having the bedroom separate from the living space giving you the ability to take a nap during the day without disturbing the other person's space. Location is ideal with the Lambeth North tube station just a couple of minutes walk and a fantastic pub on the corner. I honestly can't say enough about Simon and Gayla's hospitality and attention to detail. Already planning on our next visit.

We have finally gotten around to adding reviews for some of the best hotels and B&Bs in our travels. We wanted to highlight Captain Bligh House. Great location, great value - Tiny but comfortable bedroom - kitchen and sitting room in the royal suite were perfect for our one week stay. We could walk along the Thames and view the parliament buildings or walk to the Old Vic for a play.

Great hosts and a perfect holiday
