“Hurrah for the Kolossi!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014 via mobile

My friend and I were wondering how long had we been coming to the Kolossi. Thirty years? More. Living outside of London, I don't come very often. But nothing changes. With the increasingly upmarket Exmouth Market round the corner and with Clerkenwell booming, you might have thought that the good old Kolossi would have been revamped or sold off to some chain or other. But no. At six o'clock the place is dark but you can see the familiar two waiters sitting and chatting over a glass. And the welcome is the same. Even if you hadn't been there for a few years, you're still welcomed warmly by the ever-youthful guy with the pencil moustache and his sidekick. The food doesn't change either and it's reliably good as well as traditional - we had the best crispest, freshest kalamari I've tasted in along time. The mains were excellent and served in gargantuan quantities. Retsina and Greek coffee to finish. Wonderful. Long live the Kolossi!

“Brilliant Greek Restaurant close to Sadler's Wells”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2013

We have been coming to the Kolossi Grill for over 20 years. You always get such a warm welcome, service is friendly and efficient, the food is delicious and the atmosphere is always lovely - one of happy contentment. It is such good value. In the Summer there are some tables outside too. We have had so many happy times here - with friends and family or just the two of us. Harry, Kyriacou and all the team are wonderful. Great location for Sadler's Wells - it is just a few minutes walk away and you can always have an early supper so you're not rushing. Highly recommended. If you are a tourist staying nearby - you can trust this place for quality and price. Many customers are like us - regulars over many years.

“What a find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013 via mobile

Chanced upon this little bistro last Friday Menu outside looked reasonable but place was full to bursting (usuallyA good sign)so booked for Saturday instead.
Charming welcome by mature waiters. Such a Change from the (unfortunately all too common) disinterested teenagers that blight other places. Wine ordered and time to peruse the menu. Starters were an interesting mix of Greek/Cyprus fare. The meat/mint/rice stuffed vine leaves and gigantic beans were a reminder of holidays past.
Fancied a mousaka and Wow it was huge and obviously freshly cooked Definitely NOT Microwaved from a freezer like some pubs do. It was sensational!
The wine was pleasant and the atmosphere buzzing like a proper taverna. Tried their Greek coffee to gee us up and remembered that as our mistake from a Cretan holiday too. Perhaps a little too authentic for us. Its definitely for an acquired taste!
Overall an excellent meal at a reasonable price for any UK city nevermind Islington.
We intend to revisit next time we're in that area and heartily recommend it.
The Kolossi atmosphere and friendly staff are almost unique in London.

“Good Food, nice atmosphere, v.expensive vino!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

Had the £5.50 lunch menu, food was excellent quality and quite large portions. Service was friendly and efficient. However, we ordered a carafe of rose house wine and was very expensive for 500mls carafe of decent, but nothing special wine.

Dear SapphireG,
Thank you for your review. We are glad that you enjoyed your lunch and found the quality of food and large portions great value for money.

We are sorry to hear that you feel the cost of wine was expensive though. We do not have a Rosé house wine. Our house wines are called Kolossi (red and white) which are £13.50 a bottle or £8.90 for a 50cl carafe.
The Rosé is served by the bottle at £16.50. I am assuming that a member of staff made an exception for you and decanted 2/3rds of the bottle of Rosé into a 50cl carafe. Perhaps this is why you found the price higher than expected.

We value your comments and always strive to improve and keep our customers happy.

Many thanks again.
Harry

“Amazing food, service and atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2013

My partner Trevor and I have been going to this restaurant for many years and had our first date here nearly 8 years ago. We come here every year for our anniversary and, despite the same being in December, they are always able to accommodate us around their very busy Christmas bookings.

The staff are friendly and attentive and the service is always quick and efficient, no matter how busy it is. The food is excellent value and the portion sizes are huge!

I always have the moussaka, which is certainly the best I have ever eaten to date. My partner usually orders the kleftiko, which is tender and falls off the bone.

The ambience is amazing - the place cannot be faulted!
