A quick two courses for a singleton dinner as I was away in London on business: Pizza Express was round the corner from the hotel so I gave it a whirl.
The meatball starter was pretty good; the tomato sauce had some nice spicy peppers in it, and the quantity was just right. Similarly I couldn't fault the service - at 5:30pm it wasn't particularly busy, but the staff were attentive and quick.
The disappointment was the pizza. I tend to go for the Diavolo on a Romana (thin) base, because I like spicy stuff. At my local Pizza Express back home the peppers have a kick to them, and the chilli oil would probably dissolve the varnish on the table if you spilt it (Diavolo does mean "devil", "demon" or "fiend", after all). As far as the peppers on the London Pizza Express go ... well, I've had leeks with more flavour. And the "chilli oil" did seem to have stuff in, but it didn't really taste of anything at all.
In short, then: good service, good starter, disappointing pizza. And given that the restaurant has "pizza" in its title, that's the bit you ought to enjoy most.
