“Very enjoyable lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Visited this restaurant by chance on a Saturday lunchtime. After initially being told there would be 20 minute wait for the table and that as there was no room for us to wait in the restaurant, we would have to leave and come back later, we decided just to leave. Luckily at that very moment a table became suddenly available and so we were called back and shown to a very nice cosy spot in a wood panelled booth. Enjoyed a delicious starter of fish soup and an excellent steak and onion pudding - both very filling, so no room for pudding unfortunately. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful - we were unhurried and made to feel very welcome. Would certainly visit again when in the area - but maybe book first.

“Friendly, good food, clean...”

We stumbled across this restaurant close to Spitalfields Market on Sunday - in time for a late big breakfast. (on sale up until 1 pm). The staff were all good nature, helpful and fun. The place has a lovely atmosphere. The tea and coffee were excellent and the breakfast well cooked and plentiful. We will go back (the Sunday lunch, available after 1pm, looked lovely as well).

“Good, but how about twice the steak in half the time ?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

Lovely location to the side of Spitalfields with the Hawksmoor church at the end of the road. Pleasant ambience and the food we had was good quality. Perhaps contributory negligence on my part to ask for my sirloin well done, but a 45 minute wait was excessive. Perhaps they were rummaging around in the kitchen looking for a suitable microscope slide to mount it on !! I've read other reviews, this is a good restaurant that could be a great one with a bit of effort. They have a lot going for them.

“Nice little find”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

A friend fell over this restaurant/bar and what a nice discovery this was. It's not too busy so feels very intimate which on a Friday night in London is a miracle. We only stayed in the bar area which was very good - wine good value too. Service a bit slow, but a good find.

We stumbled across The English Restaurant on the way back to Liverpool Street, and we are very pleased we did. The tables are cosy and private in the booths, the menu is classically English and there is a superb wine list, with many quality French wines. What a change this makes, especially in London!
The staff are attentive and nothing is too much trouble. Clearly the food is all freshly prepared and cooked, and for that, you dont mind a short wait. The food quality was simply superb, my beef fillet cooked to perfection, with very crispy potato chips and a generous salad.
Its not the cheapest restaurant around, but you pay for what you get, and it is London after all.
If you are ever near Spitalfields, you must make a visit!
