“Excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2013

We were looking for some traditional pub food and I think we found some of the best in London. We had Scotch eggs, the traditional beef stew, lamb and fish and chips: everything was tasty and relatively light (!). The guy at the bar recommended some interesting ales, too. Try it if you have the time when in London!

“tepid food, poor value”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

tepid soup reheated but not much. main carvery sounded good but poorly presented, veggies uninteresting , yorkshire pudding overblown occupying half a plate. Service uninspired, Jazz group cramped in one corner and could hardly be heard, not their fault.

Never again.

“Failed to live up to past expectations”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

Six of us met for breakfast and having not been there for fifteen years,I was looking forward to it.
Sadly the experience was a BIG let down. The service was appalling, two girls were waitressing and serving behind the bar quite frankly had no social skills. They could hardly be bothered to say anything when food was brought to the table and no apology was offered when the order was messed up and one of our party had to wait an extra 15 minutes for his breakfast. The food overall was pleasant, but why have staff who have no interest in being there and in doing so drag your business down.

“Welsh rarebit to avoid”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2013 via mobile

Having visited this pub once before we were really looking forward to eating here. As it was lunchtime and we were anticipating a large dinner later we were in the market for light, tasty food and hence ordered the Welsh Rarebit. In my book, Welsh Rarebit is cheese sauce on toast. - I have had this in many other establishments and never been disappointed. What we were presented with was a dark brown wooden platter with one small slice of toast covered in a brown, burnt mess. This was dry and tasteless and a far cry from the creamy, moist dish that I had visualised. As this was at a cost of £5.50 I decided to complain : I was told that the Welsh Rarebit was a pre-prepared dish of cheddar soaked in Worcestershire sauce - this bears no resemblance to any Welsh Rarebit recipe that I have ever come across. In fairness we were not charged for this travesty of a dish but for a "foodie" pub to serve up such a misnoma is virtually criminal. Also there was no salt available to accompany our Goose Fat chips : I understand that there are health issues attached to salt but if you are ordering Goose Fat Chips hasn't any such consideration already gome out the window ? Needless to say I will not return.

“good honest pub grub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

This is a traditional English pub with straight forward but good quality pub food and an excellent selection of beers. The staff are very welcoming and the food is good value especially for London. Very handy for the Barbican.
