“Fantastic location but hotel needs some TLC”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

We stayed here for a 2 night mid week break. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in Liverpool and in general at the hotel. For us the management could have ensured that our stay was excellent rather than just good by just addressing some issues.

The bedroom was in need of a facelift. The wooden window frames were in need of painting and general maintenance as the wood was rotting. They are also single glazed (probably due to planning restrictions) so do let in quite a bit of noise on an evening and early morning, to be fair though I guess that this has to be expected when situated in a city centre.

The carpet in the bedroom was really dirty. The worst part was a trail of stains from where the tea tray at one end of the bedroom was situated to the other side of the far wall where the bin was situated. Obviously dripping tea bag stains. If the bin had been moved closer to where the tea making facilities were, I am sure this could have been alleviated from the offset. However good room management should have also addressed this problem and had it cleaned. We also found that the room furniture was quite dusty. The lighting is very poor and not all lamps were working. This makes it very difficult to apply make up.

The bathroom was a good size but the ceiling showed stains from previous leaks and there was also a large size area next to the ceiling hatch that had peeling paint down the full side of the hatch.

To re address, if the management make some fine adjustments to this hotel it could get a full 5 stars every time. It is for this reason that I list the above as I would like to see improvements. For managements information the room number was 208.

All in all we did enjoy our stay, the building and architecture is fantastic. You could not wish for a better location to visit Liverpool one. We did not eat at the restaurant as we had already booked to eat at other places for this visit, thus we cannot comment on the food.

Many thanks for your constructive review of 62 Castle St. I am thrilled you enjoyed your stay in Liverpool and that our perfect location- which we pride ourselves on- was much to your liking.

With regards to maintenance and cleaning shortfalls – I have investigated these matters fully and we are in the process of ensuring each and every one of our boutique rooms and bathrooms are of a 5* quality.

As you assume, the beautiful architecture of 62 Castle St. is listed and therefore, we are unable to offer double glazed window features. However, all of our rooms are fitted with draught-proof curtains to ensure maximum comfort.

We would love you to visit 62 Castle St. again and we hope you have the opportunity to sample our beautiful fine-dine menus in our Merchants Bar & Restaurant the next time you stay with us.

Kind Regards,

Emma Wright

I stayed here as a last minute booking because my usual haunt was full. Have to say, I'm glad it was!! Although the room rate was slightly higher than my usual preferred budget it felt worth it. From the moment I checked in the staff were excellent .... Kenny at check in being a real character and a very helpful and welcoming chap. The room was lovely - loads of space, tastefully furnished and suprisingly quiet given the prime city centre location. I had a late check in so dashed out for a quick snack rather than enjoy the restaurant as I still had some paper-work to do in my room unfortunately. Had a brilliant night's sleep and enjoyed a really well cooked breakfast. My mate's nan once said "You can always tell a hotel by it's sausages" which sounds ridiculous but over the years has proved remarkably true. Suffice to say, 62 Castle Street's breakfast sausages were excellent!!

Wonderful building, friendly staff, had our own little balcony looking out over Castle Street. Rooms very spacious with everything you need. I would agree that the lighting is not quite sufficient, especially when applying make up. Service in the bar was perfect very friendly staff down to the doorman who got us a bucket of ice when we returned one evening to find the bar closed. Good choice of breakfast menu and again very helpful staff.
Great location near to Albert Docks, Liverpool One, Mathew Street all close at hand.
Would definitely come again

Thanks to all.

Visited 62 Castle Street for the second year running for my wedding anniversary after having such a good stay last year.

I am judging this stay off the memory of last year so please bear this in mind when reading the following...

This years stay cost us around 15% more than it did last year but were happy to pay the extra. The hotel was full on Saturday night so the room we were assigned was sub-standard to last year even though it was next door to the room we had 12 months ago. Bedside lap didn't work on my wife's side of the bed and as curtains needed to be drawn due to the size of the windows this left the room quite dark.

The building itself is stunning both in its architecture and finish inside with marble pillars etc and the location is fantastic due to its proximity to the centre of the city.

Very nice hotel in general but did not provide the value for money so will be looking elsewhere for next year

We stayed here when attending a conference but glad we chose this over normal business hotel. Its an old bank and has a beautiful central staircase. The room had enormous proportions and large windows. There were oversized leather armchairs with footstools, flat screen TV, ipod dock (not brill sound quality though, couldnt work out if could play this through the tv). Great super king bed on a split level. Generous sized bathroom with good shower. Nice touches like decent coffee and bottled water. Yes lighting could be improved and my bedside lamp didnt work but didnt bother me too much.
Friendly staff. Bar was nice but absolutely deserted at 9.30 on a Tuesday night. Didn't bother with breakfast so can't comment. There was free internet connection, wifi in rooms would be even better (wifi in reception and bar I believe)
Voucher for Liverpool One underground parking(make sure in right car park though), ask at reception.
Very central, good value (£89) lovely and quiet, best bed ever. Good for couples and business people who want a bit of pampering at the right price.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 101. accessed by small corridor off the main stairs so very private and quite.

Room was very spacious and a split level with a very comfy extra large bed. Sofa and a good size TV, wall mounted.Location ideal for shops and Mathew St. Quiet and a great night's sleep. Breakfast was at table service and very friendly. The breakfast food itself was hot and enjoyable. Friendly and professional reception staff too.

Room Tip: My stay was on the top floor - so thtat may be why it was quiter for a city centyre - but the hotel...

Room was very dark - there being just 2 table lamps (and a light in a closet) to illuminate the room. Worse, one of the lamps had a blown bulb - difficult to read anything in my room. Called room service (no reply) and went down to reception (unmanned) and left a written message on the desk on my way out for the evening. No response. Breakfast was comprehensive - though had to ask for marmalade to be brought to the self service table. The building does have the drawbacks of an old building that has been converted and is definitely looking a little tired but on the positive side, the location is very good, very central and with an excellent Italian restaurant almost opposite. Might stay again but only for a night or two.
