John was, as said previously by others on this site, a pleasant host. However the exterior of the property is very depressing on arrival. Very shabby indeed although he did say this is being repaired soon. With the title of Elegant House, I perhaps expected it to be more elegant inside than it was. We stayed 3 nights. We arrived late from Devon so we were quite tired. The room was large with a nice bed but it had an unpleasant smell of mothballs located in the chest of drawers. No tea making facilities without asking, no tv in room and no ensuite - had to go next door to shower room. On our third night costing £105 the room had not been touched: bed unmade, unreplenished tea making but the cups had gone. May have been a blessing as the individual milk pods were solid, had gone off the day before. Worse still, there was the master key in the outside of the door. Not very pleased with that. Breakfast was indeed different from usual. I am happy with continental breakfast on the continent such as eggs, cheese, crackers, rolls, jam, cakes etc but not so keen on salmon and mozarella. There were cold boiled eggs and he made up toast using rye bread. At some point I would have preferred him to go and leave us to eat quietly and not to have to make conversation with him all the way through breakfast.

The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. John was a fantastic friendly host who provided us with a delicious breakfast that was far above the average run of the mill fry up you get with most B&B's. Lychees and smoked salmon , what a treat ! Definitely recommended.

John was a great host with a super amount of knowledge about Liverpool. Great breakfast with excellent conversation. He is quite the urban gardener and has embraced a second career as inn keeper with gusto.
Keep using the door knocker robustly so he knows you have arrived.

Room Tip: Stayed on. Second flor so remember if you have heavier luggage

In April 2014 we visited Liverpool to attend a friend’s wedding. Since we were travelling a long distance, we decided to extend our stay at Elegant House for an extra night in order to see more of the city. We found John, the guest house owner, to be a warm and genial host. Our room was both comfortable and spacious and the private bathroom (just next door – on the landing) was clean and smart. The highlight of our stay at Elegant House was John’s breakfast which consisted of locally sourced ingredients and homemade dishes.

John was incredibly helpful in suggesting things that we could do – the guest house is not far from Lark Lane, where we enjoyed 2 lovely meals on his recommendation. On the final day of our stay, he even took us on a tour of nearby buildings associated with Ringo Starr.

I had the pleasure of staying at Elegant House for the grand total of ten whole weeks, while I worked on Foyle's War which was filming in Liverpool in the Spring months of 2014. I went to stay for two nights and liked it so much, I decided not to leave.
I think, perhaps, I can claim to be John's longest staying guest. During this time I find John to be charming (unerringly so), as are his beautiful stylish rooms, and as were his most delicious continental style breakfasts which he prepared with what can only be described as devotion. I witnessed his weekly delight in hunting-gathering the freshest and most original of ingredients from the phlethora of interesting markets and shops around, to bring home something exciting to prepare for his guests for breakfast.
John and Frances are not only lovely people, they are also extremely knowledgeable about the city and particularly about the arts. (I think it's fair to say that, as they have both lived in Liverpool for just about forever and have both worked for many years with various Arts projects.) Every room reflects their creativity. The rooms are stylish and comfortable.
EH is central enough that you can walk just about anywhere from there, but it is also very well served by public transport. It also has parking.
The best thing about EH (about from the conviviality of the hosts) were the other guests. During the week there were often one or two other (invariably stylish and interesting) business travellers, (one week we had a troupe of young actors) staying for a few weeks or days, but then the weekenders would stream in from all over the country, and indeed from all over the world. So many interesting people would pass through, of all ages and persuasions. They would gather around the long table downstairs in the kitchen and sit and swop life stories over breakfast, or just feel comfortable and well enough looked after to just sit.
Yep, I think that sums Elegant House up. John makes his guests feel comfortable and looked after. He and the beautiful Frances certainly looked after me. Thanks to you two lovelies!

Room Tip: I liked the big room at the front downstairs, but they are all great.

I stayed there for 4 nights in April 2014. I had a room with a private bathroom although the bathroom is seperate. i.e. You have to leave your room to go to the bathroom.
The place was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast is continental and John the host, makes a very tasteful breakfast. The location is great. There is a Tesco's near by if you need anything and there is also a bus route nearby so you can catch buses into the city centre. They run frequently.
John gave lots of advice on tourist spots and even gave me a short guided tour on Ringo's Starr's houses (he lived nearby as a youngster).
The price was reasonable and I would happily recommend it.

Stayed here recently for a gig at the Echo Arena and it was great. Much more of an experience than staying in your average B&B, and definitely more character than the chain hotels. A very grand and interesting area of Liverpool but close to the city centre, just over £4 by taxi although could walk on a nice day.

The owner has a few rooms elsewhere but don't panic if you end up in one unexpectedly; ours was amazing in a very lovely house. You return to the main house for breakfast. No fry up which was fine by us. Instead it was an experience in itself with great quality products (bread, meat, yoghurt, etc).

All of this plus a top bloke running the show. Good to see someone offering something just a bit different. Highly recommended, especially at the price.
