“Hot and Noisy”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

I do wish to stress the problems we had were all related to the building and its location, and were in no way related to the service we received, and we actually found out in later conversations with a number of the staff, they are as frustrated with these KNOWN problems as the guests are

Checking into The Liner was easy and painless, the reception staff were lovely and provided all the information we required for our stay. The first impression was of a well run, well appointed hotel ready to provide us with everything we needed for a great city break. We were allocated room 653, overlooking Lime Street station, giving us great views of the city from the Catholic Cathedral to the River Mersey. When we entered the room it was a little stuffy, but opening the window let in some fresh air and we went to eat in the excellent Seven Seas brasserie.
However, during the night we noticed a number of problems
1) As the temperature outside went down during the night the temperature in the room actually went up and there was no way regulate or lower it except open the window
2) Because we were overlooking Lime street station the noise was awful, especially with the window open to let in some cool air
3) The station management chose that particular night (1:30 am) to test the upgrades to their tannoy system
4) Railway drivers decided to start charging the compressed air system on their trains at 4:30 am
5) Whilst a mini bar is something I don't disagree with in a room (if you want to spend nearly a fiver for a can of stella) the light should only come on when the (glass) door is opened

We should have stayed for 2 nights, but after the the first night we decided to find another hotel, less noisy and with air condition, and write-off the cost of the second night, as no refund was offered for the unused second night
As we checked out, 4 other residents of the same part of the same floor were also curtailing their stay to find other quieter, cooler accomodation,

Room Tip: If you have to stay here ask for a high room on the street side of the hotel if you don't have...

stayed there for one night for a business meeting.
check in was very swift was told where to have breakfast in the morning and where the lifts where
Lift was very small fits 5 people if you have no suitcases, room was on the fourth floor (459) key card needs to be put in a slot at the door for the lights to work. Looked out of the window and realised that I was right above the train station. Wallpaper had been ripped off the wall beside one of the very uncomfortable beds. trying to sleep at night was a disaster because of the noise of the train station and the seagulls couldn't shut the window because the room had no air-con and it got very warm.
Next morning decided to have a bath to try and cool myself down but the plug in the bath wasn't working correctly so that was out of the question.
Breakfast was the good thing for this hotel plenty of different options to chose from.
Overall this is a nice hotel if you get the correct side of the hotel away from the train station.

Room Tip: room on the side of the train station are very noisy

The room when we arrived was very clean and airy.
Hotel staff were polite and helpful
This hotel is very well located with plenty of free parking for your entire stay
Breakfast was of a very good standard with plenty of variety for all dietary requirements

Liverpool is a great place to visit and we will be visiting again soon and would definitely choose the liner as the place to stay.

Excellent value for money
Many thanks :)

The hotel was very good value for money though it badly needs air con fitting. There were some positives and some negatives. The reception staff were okay but not overly helpful, we were a large party having booked 7 rooms and some who requested assistance, for instance a fan that worked and another a change to a cooler room across the corridor, were treated with a sigh and shrug. The fan did materialise but the room change for our next two nights did not and this being a Sunday morning with very many people checking out it would not have been too difficult to arrange. However on the Tuesday as I checked out I did come across an extremely friendly and helpful receptionist with blonde curly hair and specs, she must have been one of the good ones I'd read about. The cleaning on my floor was hit and miss with the complimentary tray not being replenished and on my second day only the bathroom was done and the bedroom not touched, yet those on the 5th floor said the cleaners were A1, down to the individual I expect.

We dined in the restaurant twice on their very reasonable early evening menu and the food was first class, there was a good selection and it was extremely tasty. The breakfasts offered the same but there was a bit of a scrabble if you went down at a busy time with queues at every section. We all returned to the hotel on the Sunday evening and decided to end the day with a few drinks only to be told after around half an hour that the bar would close at 10.30pm, now most of our party have travelled extensively around the world and this was certainly a first most hotels offer a 24 hour service, not that we were looking for that!!. We had a round of drinks and nowhere to drink them so a porter showed us to an upstairs lounge only for a rude receptionist to come along and rather loudly say we couldn't stay there. She had words with the porter who said we were there now so would have to stay, thank goodness for him!! A porter was also extremely helpful to others in our party, he was an older chap and couldn't do enough for you, so well done him!

Another member of staff who gave outstanding service was Liby who seemed to be in charge of the restaurant, whether he served you morning coffee a light lunch or at dinner he was always friendly, helpful and extremely professional, a real bonus to the hotel.

We were very happy with the hotel's location and loved the outdoor sitting area where we met up and often congregated for a coffee and chat. The rooms were spacious, well fitted and the decor was fine. On the whole we were pleased with facilities but there is, clearly from what I've written, some room for improvement. I still feel that it warrents the four stars I've given and would love to go back if and when they get air con! We'll know not to spend our money in their bar though!!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front of the hotel are cooler than those getting all the afternoon and evening sun...

Stayed at the Liner for a one night stay last weekend. Went with some friends and have stayed here several times. The hotel is just a 'stone's throw' from Lime St station so very convenient, the rooms are clean, the staff very pleasant & efficient and decent selection for breakfast.

The reason I've only given it an 'average' rating is because the boiling hot weather made the rooms unbearable. I'm amazed that such a reasonable sized hotel doesn't have air-con, or failing that, a fan available for every room - the receptionist said that extra had been ordered but they were 'all now out' so therefore not enough had been ordered, despite plenty of notice on weather forecasts of the red-hot spell coming !!

Sleep was impossible with dripping sweat all night - we had the window open the few inches allowed and then had to contend with the noise of seagulls and the train station so was delighted to get back home - to a more comfortable environment and decent sleep.

Besides all that - we are due back there in November for a 2-night stay (which was already pre-booked) and hopefully will be more enjoyable as the temperatures will be different !
