“Very Noisy!!”
Reviewed October 1, 2007

My partner and I recently stayed at the Thistle Liverpool, and I have to say we won't be going back there!
On the positive side the staff were lovely and the hotel is only a short walk from the city centre shops and restaurants. Our room also had a great view of the Mersey.
On the negative side the room we stayed in (standard double) was out dated and on the small side - particularly the bathroom. The real problem was the noise. Our room had an interconnecting door to the next room, which was occupied during our stay. Unfortunately we could hear every noise the people in the next room made as the sound-proofing was non exsistent. I had to call reception to complain about noise at 3.15am, which turned out to be from 2 rooms away. At 4.30am the people in the next room came back from their night out, and although they were just talking we could hear everything so of course it kept us awake. We could even hear them use the toilet!!
When we complained at check out time we were offered an upgrade should we ever chose to stay at the hotel again. No refund was forthcoming even when we asked for one. Needless to say I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone wanting any sleep!

Absolutely awful hotel. Outside looks fine and the lobby isn't too bad but once you go up to the rooms it all goes horribly wrong. Old, dated, shabby, smelly rooms with about 8 TV channels, poor internet services (£6 p/h !!), sour-faced receptionists - just a bad experience all round. Avoid if you can. There must be better hotels in the city.

Stayed here for one night. The hotel is easy to find when entering Liverpool and not too far to the centre and the bars (10 min walk to Matthew Street).
The hotel has a nice atmosphere, rooms are clean and nicely decorated, light and airy - ours (an executive room, which basically just meant it was a bit bigger than the standard room) had a really long panoramic type window. The room also had an iron and ironing board which was handy. Only thing I didn't like about the room was that you could not detach the shower head in the bathroom, but this was not really an issue for me. Parking was 2 mins away round the corner and cost £6.50 per day.

On the negative side, If you are staying on a Sunday morning, expect to be woken up at 9am by the cathedral, which chimes for about an hour! Breakfast wasn't included in our price and the info sheet in the room said it was £14.95!! So we didn't bother and went into town for breakfast instead.

When coming down to the ground floor in the lift, listen out for the recorded womans voice, who announced, much to our amusement that this floor contained reception and "mating rooms" :)

All in all a pleasant stay.

The lobby was very nice and the staff were welcoming. The room was small, as was the bathroom, but we were only staying for one night so it did the trick. If you were to stay there for a week, it might be a bit too small if it was for a holiday.

The room was lovely and clean and you could really tell from the creases in the duvet cover! If you are hygiene freak like me then you shouldn't have any problems!

Our room had a cool view of the River Mersey. Other rooms had views of the 'city'. Our friends stayed in a different room, with a view of some apartments. We both paid the same price.

We were going out into Liverpool as it was our friends' birthday. Beforehand, we went into the hotel bar, but this wasn't really anything special. In a weird way, it didn't really match the rest of the hotel.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of the main town centre, about 10 minutes and i did it in heels, so it was fine!! The breakfast was included in the price and was buffet style, so of course there were muffins, full english breakfast, pastries, breads etc. If it wasn't included, I would have probably gone into town for a cheaper version!

When we came in at 1am, it was nice that they had a security guard in the lobby who made sure we were staying at the hotel, so it was safe.

There is an NCP car park next door, but we were able to use the hotels car park which is just around the corner and we were told that sometimes you can get away without paying for it. We did pay to use it, but not as much as we should have! So for the sake of a five minute walk, you could save yourself a bit of cash.

The only negative about the stay was that for a short period at 7am in the morning, we could hear people opening and closing their doors,
which sounded like slamming. (The curtains are fab though, really thick to block out any sign of light!!) Also the cleaner, I think, opened our door but must have realised we were still sleeping, so left. The same happened to our friends, as the cleaner was hoovering,
but she actually had to sit up in bed and say 'Hello'!!

Overall, it was great to get away and it was a superb hotel for the night. Would stay again for definite!

The hotel is in a good location. The entrance has quite a few stairs so not good if you have cases. The room was of a high standard and was well equipped.

None of the staff were particularly customer focused. Upon arrival the guy at the desk was looking at his screen and mumble I will be with you in a minute. Did not really make you feel welcome or important as a customer. None of the housekeeping staff spoke or said good morning. There was only one guy in the restaurant that was very pleasant, the other staff did not say anything.

The actual breakfast was very good. All very hot and looked fresh and replenished. The fresh juices needed to be chilled though, these were all warm.

Check out was quick but again, no customer service, just “that’s it”. No checks to see how my stay had been. There were a lot of young staff messing around and being told to be quiet. A pity, a great hotel with potential but needs some customer focus.

Selected this hotel due to its location and the fact that the Hotels.com website specified that it has free parking for residents. Firstly (not perhaps an error of the hotel but Hotels.com) the parking is NOT free, it is £6 per car per night, the price also came up on the website as £70 but after going through the booking process admin and booking fee;s are soon added making the price nearer to £90, I really don't think they should say it is £70 if it is not.

When I spoke to someone at the car park they did apologise for the error and not charge the parking fee.

Then when i arrived at the hotel the room appeared tired and worn out and very dated. Then when I came to have a shower my bath had someone else's hairs in it already! Generally the place was disappointing, not a lot made me feel it was worth the sort of money that they charge to stay for a night.

Really for a hotel in a chain like Thistle its not what you expect.
