“Liverpool Old Dock”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

I recently went a tour of Liverpool's Old Dock, which is actually underneath Liverpool One ( featured on Time Team) part of which can be seen via a viewing window outside the John Lewis sore at the bottom of the steps.
The FREE tour starts at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Dock, it is currently restricted to specific days but from 12th December it will be running daily 3 times a day and is definitely one not to miss.
The very knowledgeable guides provide an interesting overview of the cities maritime commercial history at various points on your way to the dock, which is accessed via the car park near to the Hilton Hotel.
It was a fascinating tour on two levels, firstly, the history of how the city developed the first commercial dock system to raise its profile from a small port to become one of the leading ports in the world, and secondly how the developers of Liverpool One researched the history and used it sympathetically in the design and building of Liverpool One.

I learnt a great deal about an important part of my cities history and would encourage all visitors to my city to go along an have a look.

This is a tour old and young alike would enjoy, the only issue I can see is one of access for anyone in a wheelchair or with mobility problems as access to the actually dock is via a staircase, I didn't see a lift, but I am sure if you contacted the Maritime Museum they would be able to confirm this.
