Description: The High Bridge is the only medieval bridge in England with houses upon it. The timber framed houses built in 1540 were bricked over in the 19th century covering up all their charm. Fortunately, a restoration of the fine medieval-style building took place in 1902 under the supervision of Lincoln architect William Watkins whereby the houses were stripped down to the beams, before being re-plastered. Most of the timber beams visible today are original, dating back to the 1600's. During the renovation, carvings of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were added in the top corners of the building to celebrate their Coronation which took place that same year. The unique features of the underside of the bridge can only be seen by boat, but the interior of the building can be appreciated whilst enjoying a coffee or tea at Stokes High Bridge café, the occupants since the early 20th Century.

We had two Lincolnshire Teas which comprised of Lincolnshire plum cake and Lincolnshire poacher cheese. A great combination and a lovely cake. The tea was also very good. Lovely old cafe. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The coffee is also very good at Stokes. Highly recommended.

After drinking here a few times, they are definitely deserving of a review. The staff are always lovely, the food is always fresh and the coffee, well..... they are coffee purveyors, what more can you say. I look forward to many more times here with my family.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind words and for offering a review. Your encouraging comments will be passed on to the waiting staff and Chefs... Our coffee is all roasted in the heart of Lincoln using an eco-friendly system which has cut our carbon emissions drastically. The roasting process locks in the flavour which traditional roasting methods can sometimes loose or mask. We are constantly monitoring the market for the best raw coffee beans and we are glad that our efforts are appreciated by our customers. We look forward to welcoming you back to Stokes very soon.

Nice place to go for a drink but the most basic of sandwich is £7!

Some of the food is very good though and the hot chocolates are possibly the best in town...

Don't take the mick

Dear Guest

Thank you for visiting the High Bridge and for posting your review.
We are pleased that you found the hot chocolate to your liking and also enjoyed the food.
Our sandwiches prices range between £4.95 to £6.95, the three premium-priced sandwiches being: smoked salmon & cream cheese, chicken with bacon bits and Coronation chicken. We have in recent years as a company, decided to only use free range chicken in all our dishes and this has unfortunately increased the price of these sandwiches somewhat. We feel that the quality of the sandwiches, which are all prepared to order and served with locally produced crisps and salad garnish are not overpriced especially compared to other establishments. We hope that you may visit us again in the future, our two course specials are very popular and considered by most to be very good value and in the warmer months we usually offer a special sandwich of the day which is always very reasonably priced.

Rather a quirky little cafe over a shop selling all sorts of fantastically aromatic coffees and teas. The cafe over looks the main street and river. Lots of excellent choices of snacks to main meals with Lincolnshire local produce featuring many times on the menu. Good value, good sized portions. Friendly staff.

Dear guest,

We thank you for your positive review and are glad that you enjoyed your experience at the High Bridge café. The building is indeed quirky & the only one of its kind in the UK!The bridge was built in 1160 and the buildings upon it date from 1540. A complete renovation in 1902 restored them to their original glory after the Victorians had plastered over them, hiding much of their charm...
We are keen ambassadors of the Select Lincolnshire brand and aim, wherever possible, to source all ingredients locally & it is lovely to know it doesn't go unnoticed...
We look forward to welcoming you back soon and thank you once again for taking the time to review us so positively on TripAdvisor.

We often stop here on a Saturday for coffee or tea and occasionally for a bun of some sort. We choose to go to the High Bridge café because the service is friendly and prompt and the food and the coffee and tea are properly prepared and presented. We prefer to use local places if we can and the prices here are certainly competitive with the big chains. The front row view onto the High Street is a bonus.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind comments and for continuing to support local business. In these days where chains are popping up all over Lincoln, we consider ourselves very fortunate to have loyal customers like you and we hope that you continue to enjoy the things we offer at Stokes! We are a family business now in its fourth generation and much has altered on Lincoln's High Street since our early days...However our ethos has always been to offer quality goods at affordable prices and it is always great to hear when we succeed!
Once again, thank you for taking the time to review us so positively.
