Description: The High Bridge is the only medieval bridge in England with houses upon it. The timber framed houses built in 1540 were bricked over in the 19th century covering up all their charm. Fortunately, a restoration of the fine medieval-style building took place in 1902 under the supervision of Lincoln architect William Watkins whereby the houses were stripped down to the beams, before being re-plastered. Most of the timber beams visible today are original, dating back to the 1600's. During the renovation, carvings of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were added in the top corners of the building to celebrate their Coronation which took place that same year. The unique features of the underside of the bridge can only be seen by boat, but the interior of the building can be appreciated whilst enjoying a coffee or tea at Stokes High Bridge café, the occupants since the early 20th Century.

I was looking for somewhere in the Lincoln area to take a friend for afternoon tea when I came across this little gem.
The afternoon tea consisted of sandwiches (2 varieties), fruit kebabs, scones with jam and clotted cream, a selection of mini cakes and tea/coffee. This was really well presented by courteous and attentive staff. The building itself was an added treat and it felt like we'd stepped back in time.
Well done to this establishment. I'll be back as soon as possible!

A proper ancient coffee house. If this was in London it would have been one of the first banks! They roast in town nearby. The whole place has a wonderful aroma which has soaked into the ancient timber over the years and it creaks like an old boat at sea when you climb the stairs. Not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. There is access to the cafe bar ground floor. I buy my beans from here. If you are a Starbucks or Costa person, don't come here. They serve real coffee, not frothy syrupy milk shake. And it comes in china cups and glass pots, not an oversized Tommy Tippee Sippy cup.

Myself and my partner recently visited Lincoln on a very cold Saturday afternoon and had the pleasure of going to Stokes Cafe on the High Street. We have been to Lincoln many times before but never been in and so pleased we did. We sat upstairs in a booth with a great view of the shoppers and river down below and opposite the fire which was most welcome. The place itself is very quirky and traditional with bags of character and you feel like you've stepped back in time. The afternoon tea we ordered was delivered speedily despite being very busy and was superb and so looked the rest of the food that we saw being serviced. The setting and service were excellent and we will certainly be re-visiting. Thank you to the staff that served us on the day, they were all very pleasant and efficient, it helped make it an enjoyable day despite the weather outside.

Dear Mike & Jude,

Thank you very much for your positive comments. We were very happy to read that you finally took the opportunity to visit our High Bridge Café and that you enjoyed your experience.
During cold winter days nothing beats sitting indoors with a hot drink, especially in the High Bridge! We have occupied the building for over 75 years and have always tried to keep the “oldy-worldy” feel and it is great to hear that we have succeeded!
We thank you for your kind attention & comments and look forward to welcoming you back in one of our cafés again soon.

Yours sincerely,

We couldn't resist giving Stokes a try having seen it from the outside. It's historic charm was matched by excellent service and a breakfast which set us up for the day. We found a seat on the third floor with a great view over the swan-filled canal. The waitress was prompt and welcoming and the breakfast menu varied for both carnivores and vegetarians. The food was prompt. A steaming bowl of sumptuously creamy porridge with maple syrup followed by a delicious Lincolnshire sausage bap made a filling breakfast, as did a generous portion of beans and egg on toast. The waitress was attentive and accommodating and the atmosphere welcoming and busy. In all, a great start to the day on our first visit to Lincoln.

Never disappointed, lovely to lunch with Ann & David, a Roast is always on the daily specials board and vegetables always local! The only question I have to ask myself is whether I should have wine or the delicious Stokes Blue Mountain Coffee with my Roast! Maybe the answer next time is both! We always return when visiting Lincoln..... Caroline & Chris

Dear Caroline & Chris,

Thank you very much for your positive comments.
In answer to your question, we would suggest that you treat yourself to a nice glass of wine (or two) to accompany your roast dinner and finish your meal with a cup of our famous Blue Mountain Blend coffee to wash down a delicious steaming treacle sponge with custard!
Thank you for sharing your review on Tripadvisor. I know I speak for the entire team when I say we are looking forward to seeing you back again soon.
