Description: Friends, Ben and Pugsy got let down at the last minute and failed to open a Bar in Goa. Still passionate about opening a bar after getting over the disappointment they went for something closer to home. Leicester - In 1997 it was a vibrant town where they both lived, and they thought they could create something that was ideal for the city and our all their mates. They took the first pub they saw, which was really run down and on a deserted end of the high st.Although the Haunch of Vension was it's traditional name, they felt it didn't quite fit with vision so after a few days in the records office (no internet then!) They found a pub called the orange tree that used to be just 100 yards away from this site. Both the name and the building worked perfectly as they filled it with vinyl, beers and friends, bright colours and old sofas.

“Trendy and good”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

Leicester's not great for trendy bars so this is welcome. Useful if scruffy beer garden at back, often with live music, always with heaters. Inside the beer is good and the staff friendly. Try upstairs, esp when downstairs gets really crowded.

“A firm favourite”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

The Orange Tree is our favourite pub in Leicester. The food is fresh and prepared to order with some experimental dishes(compared to other pubs in Leicester)on the menu.

The beer garden is beautiful and the atmosphere is great. I've never seen any trouble in the 8 years I've been frequenting. The Orange Tree create a great vintage feel within their premises, displaying local artwork on the walls and playing alternative music.

The cocktails are a must and reasonably priced with the Orange Tree Clubcard.

“Lovely Pub Garden”
Reviewed August 26, 2012 via mobile

I really enjoy coming here for lunch especially in the summer. Eating outside in the lovely garden is lovely. It does get busy so I try not to have a late lunch or I get hungry waiting for a table watching everyone enjoying their food! Good food, hot or cold, the chips are very good. Cooked fresh to order. Great selection of drinks here too, I like pear cider in the summer and can get it here.

“Perfect in every way”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

I was visiting Leicester for a couple of days and, not being familiar with the city, followed a recommendation to pop here for a drink. We were lucky enough to visit when the weather was blissfully hot, so spent a couple of hours here on the afternoon we arrived in the beer garden. Too many pubs have token 'gardens' that are little more than smokers' corners with discarded cigarette butts, so this was a real gem. A proper outdoor space with greenery and a good mix of picnic benches, tables and chairs.

The atmosphere was fab too; very laid back and friendly, chirpy bar staff who actually looked they were enjoying their jobs (despite being busy!). I noticed a comment from another review complaining about rowdy drinkers spilling in from other pubs. There was only one hint at this when we were there - a worse-for-wear chap (about 60ish) who decided to try to have a drunken conversation with customers at the front of the pub. To give the staff their due, it was the middle of the day so there were no bouncers on and they had a quick conflab about what to do. They were all young, would not have been able to square up to him, so they quickly decided that as the man seemed good humoured, no customers had complained and he was outside the front boundary of the pub they would just keep an eye on him. It worked - after a few minutes he shuffled off, no harm done. Really well handled as they kept an eye out for their customers and a confrontation could have gone the other way.

We had such a lovely time that we returned on the second day for lunch. The atmosphere was so good we would have been happy with standard pub food so were delighted to find the food was genuinely really fresh, imaginative and plentiful. Pork and leek sandwiches with chilli jam, great chips and a gorgeous garlicky cous cous, halloumi and roasted butternut squash salad all went down well. The portions were huge so we struggled to finish them (and I'm determined to try to replicate the salad at home as it was delicious!).

Only think I can't comment on is the selection of drinks - it looked like there was a big one (and lots of cocktail menus) but, with it being hot, we stuck to cold San Miguel, which was perfectly crisp and refreshing.

The Orange Tree is a little gem that deserves to be busy (and it was, yet we got served quickly). So many other pubs in Leicester seem to have shut down (I last visited 14 years ago and struggled to find any still open) but this one has got the formula spot on and proves that if you get things right then customers will keep coming back for more. It reminds me of another of my favourite pubs, Trof in Manchester - quirky, great food, lovely staff and a trendy but friendly buzz. Looking forward to going back if I am ever in Leicester again.
