“Decent Carvery and good pub grub”
Reviewed April 28, 2013 via mobile

We eat here recently and had a good time. The pub itself is nice and well laid out - they do a good Carvery which is very popular and you will need to book if you want to go at the weekend. There is a play area at the bottom of the car park which is suitable for 3 year olds onwards. The a la carte menu is varied with some good choices for all tastes and portions are generous - you will not need to eat again that day! Good local choice if you are in the area.

“Can I have my money back?”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

The Good
It's a nice pub in a nice area, lovely to sit outside in the summer with a cold beer, the Carvery is usually quite good.

The Bad
The al-a-carte menu looks very tempting but horrible in execution. We each had a fish dish and it was over cooked, mounds of onions in a very heavy handed sickly sauce. Very disappointing and not worth the cost of the meal by half. The dauphinoise potatoes were as horrible as they were unrecognizable. By the time we left we all felt queezy for the rest of the night. We have resolved to only use this pub in future for a Carvery and a sunny day beer.

I think you need to stick to simpler menu that you can manage.

“You just want more”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

The carvery is excellent, service always comes with a smile and for a change try the specials. Always busy and this reflects on the staff and ambiance well. You know its a good place to eat when the staff and 'ex-staff' go back for meals.

in my wifes words' the carvery is just like your Mum would have cooked', definitely not one to miss( even if it is not a Sunday)

“Lovely food not so good service/dining experience”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

I can't fault the food here, we had the brie and pate to start and the carvery for main. All in all the food was very good although the presentation could have been better. Regarding the service, when being shown to our table we were pounced upon to order drinks before even sitting down, when given our drinks we were asked if we were ready to order/were we having the carvery without even having seen the menu. The restaurant was fairly busy with lots of staff but even so getting more drinks was more difficult than it should really have been. My main issue with The Shires Inn was the dining experience, I couldn't quite figure out, is it a pub or a restaurant, it seemed a bit confused. The chairs were uncomfortable and too low to make eating comfortable, the table had tacky glittery tea light holders matched with place mats and wall pictures depicting hunt scenes.....very peculiar! The cutlery was mis-matched, when given our starters I was given a huge dinner knife with a tiny fork (child size), I could forgive this once but it happened again with the main course. It was impossible to catch someone's eye to get the bill so we gave up and paid at the desk. All in all good food but the staff could do with a bit more training and the dining area could do with a refurb.

“Great Menu Variety,Friendly Service”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

Beautiful country pub in pretty village, just off the M1 Great venue for families with Children in the summer as the pub has extensive ,safe gardens full of adventure playthings that will occupy the children for hours when the sun finally arrives this year. Food range is extensive, suitable for fish and meat lovers as well as veggies with many specialities written up on a big blackboard in the main dining area. In addition they offer an "all you can eat" fixed price Curry night with at least 5 different curries on offer again inc veggie varieties. All food is cooked to order and arrives at your table fresh and cooked as ordered. My personal favourite has to be their Beef wellington, its simply delicious. All meals come with veggies and a wide range of potato choices. Service to your table is provided by very friendly and pleasant waiting staff. I would recommend booking ahead as this place is good and likely to be full most nights. This is probably one of my favourite places to eat, either on business or pleasure
