“CURRENTLY CLOSED!”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

The museum is run as a charity and some refurbishment work is taking longer than expected.
It is still closed as of today, 30th August 2012. I have spoken on the phone to the very apologetic curator who has said that the web site needs amending, but currently it cannot be due to the number of disparate parties involved.
The phone number on their website is current, so ensure that you phone first if you intend to go.

“Absolutely Amazing”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

I have never learnt so much in all my life. The curator was so informed and so generous with his time it was unbelievable. No he was an anorak just someone who knew the museum incredibly well and didn't get fed up with my what on earth is this? questions time & time again... well worth a visit

“A step back in time”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

The museum is housed under the clock tower of a Victorian building which dates from 1878 (when town gas was first made at Aylestone Road) and was originally the gatehouse to the gas works. As you arrive park immediately behind the clock tower, don't be put off by having to squeeze past the cones that are part way across the entrance, you are supposed to park behind them.
First impression on entering the museum is that you've stumbled into a junk shop or an indoor version of Steptoe's yard. Look closer though & you will find a fascinating collection of items & thoughtful displays that take you through the history of gas. We found the older exhibits of most interest but be prepared to marvel at how quickly things become museum pieces, we have certainly owned things similar to those on display.
Depending on your level of interest in such things you can get round in anything between 15 mins & an hour. The curator is always on hand to provide useful information & will do a tour as well.
Well worth a visit if you are out this way & its Free.

“Make time to visit”

This is a gem of a museum. Limited opening hours but a must for anyone that loves the museum experience rather than interactive displays in modern halls.

We visited the museum as part of a school assignment over the holidays. The children lowved it and the adults found it educational as well.
