“Oh dear”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2008

I wouldn't really recommend staying here, it just wasn't pleasant at all. Myself and two colleagues were booked in for three nights, and all of us were rather shellshocked at the end of it.

We were checking in as part of a large pre-booked conference group, so check in went as smoothly as could be expected, but on getting to my room, I opened the toilet to find 3 cigarette butts floating in the bowl. Considering this was a non-smoking hotel and the room should have been cleaned before my arrival, i was a bit shocked, but just accepted this and flushed them away. The room (and my friends' rooms) smelt rather strongly of cigarettes, and there were lots of stains on the carpet and cigarette burns on the bedspreads. Considering that the smoking ban came into force 4 months earlier, i'd have hoped the smell would have dissipated since then and they might have sorted out the bedding.

Apart from this, the room was fairly clean and adequate. There was a crack in the shower head that meant i got water sprayed in my eyes every time i turned on the shower, but it wasn't too much of a problem.

On the second day though i lifted the bathroom basin plug to wash away the water, and found the most disgusting mess of cigarette butts stuck down there, and a kind of green oozey paste. It smelt absolutely foul, the sort of smell that gets in your throat and makes you gag. Again, I thought if the bathroom was cleaned adequately they should have noticed this and unblocked it.

We ate at the hotel once, and it wasn't very nice, none of my friends could finish our meals, and the only vegetarian option on the menu was "off" that day, so there wouldn't have been any provision for vegetarians. It was a bit of a disappointment really.

Also, there was a problem with noise. My friends had rooms on different floors, on each side of the hotel, and each of them complained about being kept up at night by building works and railway announcements.

I certainly wouldn't stay there again, and wouldn't recommend it for more than one night.

Only stayed the one night, so it did the job for my needs. However, the parking is terrible. 95 rooms and onlt 12 parking spaces. When I asked where I could park the car, I was told use the train station car park. I arrived at 5pm and the car park was already full.

Additionally, unless your a train spotter, you may be unlucky to get a room that overlooks the train station. This will then give you the joy of the train announcments - a wonderful sound at 5am , listening to the stops the first train to London will be taking!

Plus point were the staff who were helpful and friendly, but thats really as far as the plus points go.

The hotel itself is perfectly adequate. The staff are very obliging, and breakfast is fine.

However, its proximity to the railway station is as much a curse as a blessing - tannoys carry on late into the night, and start again early in the morning. Shell out on some earplugs, though, and this is a good value proposition.
